Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo Riserva Monfortino stands out for its ruby red colour with garnet highlights, made from Nebbiolo grapes grown on the hills of Piedmont. On the nose, it reveals a complex sequence of aromas ranging from ripe fruit and cherries in spirit to tertiary notes of mushrooms, truffle, sweet liquorice and leather. On the palate, it expresses a solid structure, characterised by silky tannins and a pronounced mineral vein that leads the sip towards a persistent finish. Its extraordinary longevity allows it to evolve for decades, revealing ever deeper nuances.

Where it comes from

This red is born in the heart of Monforte d’Alba, a historic Piedmontese area dedicated to the production of oenological excellence. The Giacomo Conterno winery carefully selects the best plots, isolating the fruit that presents an ideal quality profile. Each bunch receives attentive care to faithfully reflect the authentic expression of the soil. The particular composition of the land imparts a marked minerality and an austere structure to the wine, making it the ideal companion for flavourful meat dishes, game and mature cheeses.

How it is produced

In the winery, the natural rhythms of the raw material are respected, starting with the vinification of the best grapes. Maceration on the skins lasts for five weeks without any temperature control, allowing the process to unfold spontaneously. Fermentation takes place in truncated conical vats made of Austrian wood, chosen to preserve the richness of the must. Ageing involves a period of at least seven years in large Slavonian oak barrels, a long rest that smooths the tannic texture and enriches the aromatic profile before bottling.

History and Curiosities

Born from the vision of the historic Giacomo Conterno winery, whose origins date back to 1908, this majestic Barolo DOCG Riserva is an absolute masterpiece, produced exclusively in exceptional vintages. Once labelled as “Extra Barolo” and historically appreciated by doctors and professionals, Monfortino now boasts an international reputation and extraordinary longevity. Its global prestige is sealed by iconic accolades, such as the renowned 100 points from Robert Parker. A red wine of rare elegance that celebrates the excellence of the Monforte d’Alba region.

The beginning of the story of Giacomo Conterno winery is conventionally traced in 1908 when Giovanni Conterno and his family (including Giacomo, that is one of three children), returned to Italy after he emigrated to Argentina, they start an inn, producing wine, in the village at San Giuseppe in Monforte d'Alba. Giacomo grows, therefore, between the tavern and the winery until he goes to fight in the First World War as a gunner. Returning home, he devoted himself entirely to the production of wine, bringing it to be sold not only in Piedmont and Liguria, but throughout Italy. Read more
