Description

What kind of wine it is

The Barolo Cascina Francia by Giacomo Conterno is a still red wine made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. Characterised by an intense garnet colour, it offers a deep aromatic profile with prominent notes of raspberry, blackcurrant, rose and violet, complemented by hints of coffee, mint and tobacco. On the palate, it is structured and balanced, distinguished by a firm tannin without any bitter notes. Its pronounced savouriness and solid acidic framework lead to a long and elegant finish, faithfully reflecting the varietal character of the grape.

Where it comes from

This renowned wine takes its name from the historic Cascina Francia vineyard, located in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe. The site benefits from a well-ventilated microclimate that ensures optimal development and harmonious ripening of the Nebbiolo clusters. The vine roots penetrate a calcareous soil, an essential geological component that imparts the wine with its characteristic gustatory tension and a distinct sensation of salinity. This precise geographical origin results in a complex and balanced drinking experience.

How it is produced

In the winery, the Nebbiolo grapes are crushed and destemmed before fermentation begins. The process takes place in steel vats at a controlled temperature, using only indigenous yeasts and with regular daily pump-overs. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes a slow 48-month maturation in barrels, encouraging the development of breadth and structural complexity. The production cycle is completed with a final resting period that consolidates its full organoleptic harmony.

The beginning of the story of Giacomo Conterno winery is conventionally traced in 1908 when Giovanni Conterno and his family (including Giacomo, that is one of three children), returned to Italy after he emigrated to Argentina, they start an inn, producing wine, in the village at San Giuseppe in Monforte d'Alba. Giacomo grows, therefore, between the tavern and the winery until he goes to fight in the First World War as a gunner. Returning home, he devoted himself entirely to the production of wine, bringing it to be sold not only in Piedmont and Liguria, but throughout Italy. Read more
