Description
What kind of wine it is
Verduno Pelaverga Speziale by Fratelli Alessandria is an intensely aromatic red wine from Piedmont, made from Pelaverga Piccolo grapes. Within the Verduno Pelaverga denomination, it stands out for its ruby red colour with subtle purple highlights. On the palate, it is lively, supported by pronounced freshness and a velvety tannic structure. The bouquet releases an intense spicy note of pink pepper combined with fragrant small red fruits, ensuring a deep precision of flavour, preserved thanks to vinification in steel.
Where it comes from
The vines take root in the municipality of Verduno, the chosen cradle of the rare Pelaverga Piccolo grape variety. The rows benefit from varied exposures at an altitude between 250 and 400 metres. The plants, around twenty years old, grow on a calcareous soil of medium texture with a tendency towards loam-silt. This geological composition nourishes the grapes, giving the wine its unmistakable territorial character that defines its fresh and dynamic soul.
How it is produced
The manual harvest takes place at the end of September to select only the best bunches. Maceration and fermentation occur in steel tanks at controlled temperature for about eight days. Maturation in inert containers of steel or cement continues for five or six months, ending with a brief final rest. This targeted vinification protects the integrity of the grape variety, highlighting its varietal expression and its vibrant, natural spiciness.
History and Curiosities
Created in 2011 to pay tribute to the rarity of Pelaverga piccolo, an indigenous grape variety grown almost exclusively in Verduno, this red wine by Fratelli Alessandria proudly asserts its own identity. The name “Speziale” celebrates its unique character: an unmistakable and pronounced spiciness, dominated by notes of pink pepper and whole spices.

Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro and son Vittore are the proud custodians of the family’s winemaking tradition and passion, which date back over a century, and represent the seventh and eighth generations of winemakers (the first three generations as Fratelli Dabbene and then as Fratelli Alessandria following a marriage which took place in around 1870).
The winery vinifies only estate grown grapes and has maintained a family dimension. These qualities make it possible to establish a direct and "personal" relationship with the individual vineyards and barrels, an invisible but important connection that we hope will reach and inspire consumers when they drink our wines.
