Description

What kind of wine it is

Fontodi Case Via Pinot Nero is a still organic red wine from the Hills of Central Tuscany. Produced by Fontodi exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes, it displays a layered and captivating sensory profile. On the nose, notes of plum, redcurrant and wild strawberries emerge, intertwined with aromatic herbs, rose petals, oriental spices and mentholated tobacco. The palate is fleshy and enveloping, supported by silky tannins and a vibrant savouriness that gives energy to the mouth. This wine perfectly balances red fruit and earthy nuances, finishing with a long persistence.

Where it comes from

This red is born in Tuscany, in the renowned area of Panzano in Chianti, at the heart of the Hills of Central Tuscany. The limited production comes from a single hectare of vineyard facing west and trained using the Guyot method. Fontodi tends the land following strict organic methods, excluding the use of synthetic chemicals. Soil fertility is maintained thanks to natural compost obtained from pruning residues and manure from Chianina cattle raised directly on the farm. In this sunny terroir, the vines find ideal conditions to develop an authentic expressive profile, capable of enhancing the freshness and aromatic complexity of the grape variety.

How it is produced

The grapes are hand-picked with meticulous selection of the bunches. Vinification begins with a spontaneous fermentation carried out by indigenous yeasts in truncated conical Allier vats. Maceration lasts about two weeks and is accompanied by constant manual punch-downs to encourage aromatic and polyphenolic extraction. After gentle pressing, twelve months of ageing in Tronçais barrels adds breadth of flavour to the wine, while preserving its lively acidity. This process gives an elegant structure, where the fruit harmonises perfectly with the fine tannic texture.

History and Curiosities

The historic Fontodi estate, founded in 1968 in Panzano, produces this rare organic Pinot Noir from a single hectare in Chianti Classico. After a meticulous manual selection, the grapes ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in truncated conical Allier vats for two weeks. The prized 2020 vintage is then aged for 12 months in Tronçais barriques, achieving an elegance that has been awarded 93 points by Vinous and 89 by Robert Parker and Wine Spectator.

Fontodi has belonged to the Manetti family since 1968, which for centuries has been dedicated to another typically Chianti activity: the production of the famous terracotta. Precisely in the name of this strong bond with the land and with a great passion for quality, the company has successfully turned towards increasingly careful cultivation of the vineyards and a deeper knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the Panzano area.

Fontodi is a certified organic farm and covers 170 hectares, of which more than 80 are planted with vines. The principles of naturalness and sustainability inspire the agriculture that is practised: not only are no synthetic chemical products used, but an attempt is made to make the most of the company's internal resources by reducing external inputs. For example, the vineyards are fertilised using compost produced by combining pruning residues and manure from the farm's own Chianina breeding. Respecting the environment produces better, cleaner wines with a better expression of the terroir.
