Description
What kind of wine it is
Barbera d’Alba Vigna Martina is a still red wine from Piedmont produced by Elio Grasso, made from Barbera grapes. It displays a deep ruby colour with violet edges, introducing a profound aromatic profile. On the nose, a pronounced balsamic note emerges, accompanied by hints of blackberry, sour cherry in spirit, wild violet and lavender. The bouquet is enriched by notes of bergamot tea and star anise, well integrated thanks to ageing in French oak barrels. On the palate, it expresses a lively freshness, balanced by softness and fine tannins, with a persistent finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of the Barbera d’Alba area. The vines, trained using the Guyot system, benefit from a south and south-west exposure at 380 metres above sea level. The soil is characterised by a medium-textured calcareous composition with a sandy tendency, a combination that enhances the qualities of the grape variety. This particular geological matrix of the Piedmontese terroir supports a lively and incisive sip, ensuring the marked savouriness that prolongs the tasting experience.
How it is produced
Production begins with a manual harvest between the end of September and the beginning of October, from 35-year-old vines. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with daily pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation. Subsequent maturation in French oak barrels imparts complexity and harmony to the structure. Before being released for sale, the wine undergoes a further rest in the cellar for at least eight months, thus achieving impeccable gustatory balance.

In the early 1980s we decided to go back to our origins as grape growers, well aware that our work did not stop at the end of the row of vines. We had no illusions that we were inventing anything: we merely wanted to comply with the best in the traditions and work of our predecessors, without any preconceived ideas. The first logical consequence was the decision, from 1978, to vinify and bottle separately grapes from our various vineyards. Read more
