Description
Launched in 2009, Big Peat is a renowned Vatted Malt made with single malts from the Scottish island of Islay, where every distillery smokes their malted barley over peat. The blend uses malts from Caol Ila, Ardbeg, Bowmore, and Port Ellen. The latter distillery closed in 1983, but Douglas Laing still holds a substantial stock. The bottle differs from most vatted whiskys in that it indicates the malts that make up the blend, all but a couple of malts that the master distillers jealously guard. Big Peat is a prized small batch whisky, a term that designates a spirit bottled from just a few thousand carefully selected casks. A benchmark for Islay Vatted Whisky, Big Peat Whisky is a peaty whisky made by the Douglas Laing distillery, one of the few to boast family ownership. High craftsmanship is its hallmark, so much so that the production processes have remained virtually unchanged since its founding. It's therefore not surprising that Big Peat Whisky Islay Vatted is not subjected to any colouring process, chill filtration or alcohol reduction. By adopting these production criteria, the enzymes and essential oils are preserved intact, with all that this entails in terms of aromatic richness.
