Description
What kind of wine it is
Elio Altare's Dolcetto d’Alba is a still red wine that authentically reflects the character of Piedmont. Made from Dolcetto grapes, it appears an intense purple-red in the glass. On the nose, it offers elegant notes of violet and a bouquet of small red fruits, outlining a fresh and harmonious profile. On the palate, it reveals a dry and smooth character, supported by delicate tannins that balance the intense fruity notes, making it a pleasant and consistent drink.
Where it comes from
This red originates from vineyards located in La Morra, within the Dolcetto d’Alba area. The vines, aged between 20 and 40 years, are rooted in calcareous and sandy soils, a composition that gives the wine a clean expression focused on fruit. The predominantly north and north-east facing slopes favour a gradual ripening of the grapes. The terroir expresses itself through well-defined fruit and a balanced structure, reflecting the precise agronomic identity of the area.
How it is produced
Vinification involves a skin maceration in a rotofermenter at controlled temperature for a short period of two or three days. This technique allows for the extraction of vivid colour while preserving the softness of the palate. This is followed by ten months of maturation in steel, an ideal choice to maintain freshness and enhance the varietal aromas of Dolcetto. To fully enjoy its harmonious taste, it is recommended to decant for one hour before serving.
History and Curiosities
Originating from the sandy and calcareous soils of La Morra, in Piedmont, the Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2025 by Elio Altare expresses the pure elegance of the region. Produced from historic vineyards, this red wine captivates with its intense purple colour and refined hints of violet. The brief maceration and maturation in steel for 10 months create a pleasantly dry and harmonious profile. Elio, as energetic and bubbly as 40 years ago, supervises all the activities, but lately has been focusing as well on some challenging new projects, including winemaking in Cinqueterre, Liguria; restoring an old abandoned village in Castelmagno (in the mountains between Piemonte and France); cheesemaking in Castelmagno; growing medicinal herbs; making sparkling wine in the higher Langa hills with an old obscure indigenous variety called "Liseiret;" growing organic vegetables and fruits…our family will never run out of ideas and work!
