Description
What kind of spirit is this?
Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aberfeldy is a classic Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, offering a refined, unpeated profile at 40% alcohol by volume, aged for 12 years in four types of oak casks. It displays an intense gold hue and a medium-bodied, velvety style. The nose reveals a sweet bouquet of honey, vanilla, and fruit preserves, complemented by notes of barley, pineapple, nutmeg, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it maintains a structured character, balancing flavours of bitter orange, ginger, and pepper against a clear malt foundation, concluding with a dry and slightly bitter finish.
Origin
Crafted by Aberfeldy in Perthshire, the foundation of this whisky’s precise profile is the pure water drawn from the Pitilie Burn spring, an aquifer renowned for its natural gold deposits. This unique source earned the spirit its nickname, the ‘Golden Dram’. The distinct Highland setting provides the pristine water essential for defining its crisp, clean nature. This local environment allows the foundational cereal notes to remain vivid, perfectly complementing the sweet and spicy aromas that characterise this Scottish single malt.
Production
Production begins with an extended fermentation of over seventy hours in wooden washbacks, developing a complex aromatic base. The spirit then matures in four types of oak casks. This careful wood influence imparts a profound honeyed sweetness, vanilla depth, and gentle spicy tones that elevate the core malt character. Deliberate maturation ensures the texture remains soft and velvety while maintaining a spicy thread throughout the finish. To fully appreciate its balanced structure, this whisky is best enjoyed neat as an after-dinner digestif.
History and Heritage
Founded in Perthshire in 1896, the Aberfeldy Distillery crafts exceptional Highland single malts that have been at the heart of Dewar’s blends since 1898. This renowned whisky owes its character to the legendary Pitilie Burn, a spring located behind the distillery. Rich in natural gold deposits, these pristine waters famously inspired the spirit’s affectionate nickname: the “Golden Dram”. Deeply rooted in tradition, this smooth, velvety expression is a celebrated piece of authentic Scotch whisky heritage.
