Description
What type of wine it is
Chardonnay Altkirch by Colterenzio is a still white wine that elegantly expresses the character of the Alpine territory. Belonging to the Alto Adige Denominazione di Origine Controllata, it presents a bright straw-yellow colour enriched by greenish reflections. The aromatic profile weaves together notes of citrus and aromatic herbs with exotic hints of pineapple and mango, with light vanilla nuances on the finish. On the palate, it offers a harmonious and balanced sip, supported by a marked freshness and mineral veins that define its lean and inviting structure, the result of fermentation in stainless steel and large wooden barrels and maturation on the fine lees.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from vineyards located in the Cornaiano area, where Chardonnay has found an ideal habitat and has been cultivated for over a century. The vines grow on deep, sandy soils with gravelly deposits, determining factors in giving the wine its typical taste tension and minerality. This project stems from the commitment of the Colterenzio winegrowers, united to independently enhance the authentic South Tyrolean winemaking identity.
How it is produced
The winemaking process involves temperature-controlled fermentation conducted mainly in stainless steel to preserve the purity of the varietal aromas. A small portion of the must instead ferments in large wooden barrels, a choice that enriches the texture of the wine without overpowering the fragrance of the fruit. Subsequently, maturation on the fine lees continues for several months, giving a pleasant roundness that integrates harmoniously with the lively underlying acidity.
History and interesting facts
The Chardonnay Vecchia Chiesa embodies the essence of the Colterenzio winery, established in Cornaiano in 1960 from the desire of twenty-six winegrowers to promote the South Tyrolean territory. This label celebrates a historic vineyard and the evolution of a variety cultivated in the region for over a century, whose vines thrive on deep, sandy soils. Under the guidance of oenologist Martin Lemayr, the cooperative winery today boasts over three hundred members and celebrates the authentic vocation of the land.

It was in the 1980s, South Tyrol was primarily a red-wine region, and the quality was run-of-the-mill. Raifer, a winegrower himself, recognised the potential of South Tyrol as an outstanding winegrowing region: The terroir was cheap, sufficient vineyard area was available and the winegrowers were hard-working and skilled. His first step in his vineyard, "Lafóa", a sunny mountain slope behind the Colterenzio cellar, was to replace the Vernatsch vines with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and, later, Sauvignon Blanc. He also brought in new quality standards: Lower yield for higher-quality grapes and higher-quality wines. It was on this pilot vineyard slope that, with both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon, the new quality standard measures were introduced.
This quality philosophy extended its reach to all members of the cooperative: new grape varietals were experimented with, and quality groups created. Today, the members and workers at the cellar are committed to working in line with this model throughout the entire winegrowing area, the cellars and for all wines.
The 300 partner winegrowers of the Colterenzio winery are the backbone of the company. They work year-round on their wine hills with their families in order to supply us with top-quality wine grapes in autumn. Read more
