Description
What kind of wine it is
Chianti Classico Poggio Bonelli is a still red Tuscan wine with an elegant and complex profile. This blend skilfully combines the characteristics of Sangiovese with a touch of Merlot. On the palate, it reveals a full structure, characterised by lively acidity and firm, mature tannins. The dry, decisive flavour, enriched by the delicate spiciness imparted by the wood, leads to a rich and crisp finish. It is ideal paired with grilled red meats, stews, and medium-aged cheeses.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the Sienese heart of Chianti Classico. The rows stretch across a hillside vineyard at 280 metres above sea level, with a southern exposure that ensures optimal ripening of the fruit. Poggio Bonelli manages the land with a preference for organic practices to respect the balance of the ecosystem. This care in the vineyard results in a clean aromatic bouquet, from which intense black cherry aromas, plum and thyme emerge, wrapped in subtle hints of leather and spices.
How it is produced
Production begins with a rigorous manual harvest of the bunches, cultivated using the spur-pruned cordon method to achieve high concentration. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, supported by constant daily pump-overs. This is followed by a prolonged maceration on the skins to extract the best colour and structure. Ageing continues for ten months in small French oak barrels, followed by a further three months of rest to perfectly harmonise every component of the wine.

A property that was sought after by some of the most important Sienese families, Poggio Bonelli has belonged to numerous different families throughout the centuries. Firstly, the Spennali family owned it during the Middle Ages and passed it into the hands of the Piccolomini family in the second half of the 16th century. In the following century, probably for dynastic reasons, it became the property of the Landucci family. Finally, at the beginning of the 21st century, it came to belong to the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, the most ancient Italian bank in the territory of Siena. The wine estate is owned by the Banca Monte Paschi di Siena, which acts as a shareholder, while a team of professionals with long-standing experience in wine-making carries out the management. The result is a human, dynamic, and solid business. Read more
