Description

A still red from the heart of Tuscany, a Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, 14% ABV, produced by Tenuta Calimaia - Frescobaldi. 2021 vintage, 0.75L bottle. A wine that embodies the tradition and elegance of Montepulciano, with a blend of 90% Sangiovese. The vineyards, arranged in a ring on the Monteliscione hill, are located approximately 300 meters above sea level. The grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (maximum 26°C), and fermentation was spontaneous. Maceration on the skins allowed for perfect extraction of polyphenolic substances. The wine matured in 50-hL oak barrels for 24 months. The complex bouquet recalls notes of red fruits, specifically cherry, sour cherry, and black cherry, which blend with hints of aromatic herbs, including sage and lavender. The palate is voluminous and energetic. The red fruits have excellent shelf life; the freshness and acidity are linked to raspberry and currant. Spicy notes envelop the palate. Good persistence. The tannins are youthful, fresh, and silky.

From this winery
Tenuta Calimaia is a project that marks the return of the Frescobaldi family to Montepulciano in the name of that exploratory spirit that was also Lionardo Di Niccolò Frescobaldi's: explorer, writer and merchant, he became mayor of Montepulciano in 1390.

The vineyards, which are arranged in a crown on the Monteliscione hills, are about 300 metres above sea level and are poor in organic matter, therefore particularly suited to the cultivation of Sangiovese (traditionally called "Prugnolo Gentile" in this area).

Nobile di Montepulciano is the flagship wine of Tenuta Calimaia. The high presence of clay and the high temperatures, due to the low altitude, are in fact the perfect conditions for creating a structured and powerful Nobile wine, rich in tannins and very suitable for ageing.

Wine making Once harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (max. 26 °C) and fermentation took place spontaneously. Maceration on the skins allowed a perfect extraction of the polyphenolic substances, assisted by frequent pumping over in the initial stages of fermentation, interrupted by delestage in the intermediate phase, and then resumed in the final phase. Malolactic fermentation was completed in steel before the winter.
Aging The wine then matured in 50 hL oak barrels for 24 months. It then rested in the bottle for several months.
