Description

Orvieto is one of the rare Italian zones suitable for producing sweet wine, a fame handed down over the centuries from the time of the Etruscans. The land is exposed to morning mists, which are the most favourable to develop the Botrytis Cinerea which gives the Noble Rot. When the conditions are right – usually towards the end of October, the winery meticulously harvests the bunches of only the highest quality grapes infected with Botrytis.

From this winery
  • Start up year: 1969
  • Oenologist: Giovanni Dubini
  • Bottles produced: 135.000
  • Hectares: 24
In 1969, the Dubini family purchased the property of the 'Palazzone', built by Cardinal Theodoric at the behest of Pope Boniface VIII as a hostel for pilgrims on their way to Rome to celebrate the Jubilee in 1300 AD. Today, after a respectful restoration of the noble architecture, the 'Palazzone' is a boutique hotel with elegant suites. The hilly portion of the land adjacent to the Rocca Ripesena, with the superb view of Orvieto on its majestic cliff, consisted of sedimentary soil and clay.

On the sedimentary and clay soil, with an exciting view of Orvieto's cliff, they plant 24 hectares of vineyards to produce wines of great complexity and character.

Starting in the 1980s, under the guidance of his son Giovanni, Palazzone began a journey made up of small vinifications and bottlings, experiences necessary to arrive in 1988 at the winery's construction. Thus was born one of the most significant wineries in all of Umbria, now in its third generation with grandson Pietro.
