Description
What type of wine it is
The Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva from López de Heredia is a still red wine that embodies the excellence of Rioja, made from a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and Carignan. Its vibrant colour with elegant amber highlights previews a bouquet of vanilla, dried forest fruits, leather, and delicate earthy notes. On the palate, it reveals a medium, velvety body with a lively citrus acidity and juicy fruit of redcurrant and raspberry, closing with a long finish featuring aromas of cherry, chocolate, and a characteristic hint of tangerine.
Where it comes from
This wine originates in Haro, in the heart of Rioja Alta, Spain. The vineyards sit on limestone soils, essential for giving the wine great gustatory precision and a distinct mineral tension. The area's particular microclimate ensures high ageing potential, allowing the wine to maintain its freshness and aromatic complexity for over a decade. The López de Heredia winery manages these vineyards with a rigorous approach, aimed at authentically enhancing the natural vocation of the terroir.
How it is produced
Fermentation takes place in oak vats thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine rests for at least six years in American oak barrels, continuing its long maturation directly in the producer's cellars. This gradual process promotes the development of elegant tertiary notes and shapes a harmonious tannic structure. Decanting for approximately two hours and serving at a temperature of 18–20 °C is recommended. At the table, it offers a perfect pairing with red meats, lamb or pork dishes, and mature cheeses.
History and curiosities
An emblem of the López de Heredia winery, this celebrated red was born from the intuition of Don Rafael during the phylloxera era. Since 1877, the Haro estate has faithfully preserved artisanal methods that have remained unchanged over time. The delicate fermentation with indigenous yeasts in ancient wooden vats and the noble six-year ageing in American oak barrels give the wine a timeless charm. Awarded 95 points by Robert Parker, this masterly Rioja DOCa Reserva represents an authentic masterpiece, celebrated for its extraordinary ageing potential.

Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.
For over a century our emotions have been rooted in our love and passion for this land and its harvest. We cherish our heritage, and this combination of love and the rigorous quality standards we apply, have become our trademarks and remain our maxim for today and the future.
