Description
What type of wine it is
Michei di Michei Pinot Nero by J. Hofstätter is a still red wine, an authentic expression of the Pinot Noir grape variety. Produced in Trentino-Alto Adige under the Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT (Typical Geographical Indication), it reveals a deep ruby-garnet colour. The nose reveals aromas of cherries, wild berries and strawberries intertwined with hints of forest floor and a delicate spice, while on the palate it offers a medium body with a compact structure and a vibrant alpine freshness. The palate is led by a fine creaminess, elegant tannins and a clear mineral vein that ensures a persistent finish, harmonised by ageing in oak barrels.
Where it comes from
The vineyards are rooted in southern Trentino, on the Piccole Dolomiti above the historic centre of Ala, along south-facing slopes. The vines benefit from a high-altitude terroir, situated between 790 and 850 metres above sea level. The clear air and excellent alpine sunlight favour a slow and late ripening of the grapes. The complex terrain is characterised by dolomitic soils, morainic deposits, porphyry and gravelly clay. These geological conditions give the wine its typical vertical character and sharp aromatic definition.
How it is produced
Production begins with the harvesting of Pinot Noir grapes from trellis-trained vines. In the cellar, a portion of the bunches is destemmed, while a selection undergoes whole-cluster fermentation. The must macerates on the skins for ten days. The wine initially matures for one year in small oak barrels; after the blend is created, the ageing continues for six months, also in wood, concluding with a further period of resting in the bottle. This evolution consolidates the tannic finesse, making the wine perfect for accompanying game, red meats and mature cheeses.
History and trivia
Founded in 1907, the J. Hofstätter Estate has passed down the artistry of five generations through this elegant Pinot Noir. Under the leadership of Martin Foradori Hofstätter, the winery combines the tradition of wooden casks with the most modern technologies. The wine boasts a fascinating origin: it is born in the Little Dolomites, thanks to an exceptional high-altitude terroir located between 790 and 850 metres. Cultivated on porphyry and gravelly clay soils, the vines grow slowly, allowing for late ripening that ensures an extraordinary longevity of 10-15 years in the cellar.
