From this winery
  • Start up year: 1639
The first traces of the Hugel family in Alsace can be traced back to the 15th century. About two centuries later, Hans Ulrich Hugel settled in Riquewihr, devastated by the terrible Thirty Years' War.

In 1639, he was made an honorary town citizen and soon took charge of the powerful winegrowers' guild.

In 1672, his son built a beautiful house in the Rue des Cordiers, and above the door was carved the family coat of arms, which was the origin of the company logo still in use today.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family earned an enviable reputation for their wine-making skills and the particular way they cultivated their vineyards. Then, in 1902, Frédéric Emile Hugel settled on the premises in the centre of Riquewihr.

After 1918, many far-sighted and courageous winegrowers, including Frédéric Emile Hugel, took steps to save the Alsace vineyards. This true pioneer dedicated his entire life to promoting high-quality wines from noble grape varieties. His son Jean continued this crusade. With his perseverance and hard work, he proved that Alsace wines deserved their place among the best wines in the world.

His three sons, Georges, Jean and André, gained official recognition for Alsace 'Vendange Tardive' and 'Sélection de Grains Nobles' wines.
