Description

What kind of wine it is

Quota N Contrada by Eduardo Torres Acosta is a red wine produced in the Sicilian lands, the result of a fascinating blend of red and white grapes. The combination of Nerello Mascalese and Grenache with white varieties such as Carricante, Coda Di Volpe and Grecanico Dorato creates a sip with a dry and dynamic profile. On the palate, it stands out for its vibrant freshness and a marked saline texture, which give the wine an overall balanced, linear and extremely elegant structure, thanks to spontaneous fermentation and ageing in cement and used barrels.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the north-western slope of Etna, in the historic Contrada Nave, situated at over a thousand metres above sea level. The soil, of clear volcanic origin, composed of stones and sand, gives the wine a pronounced gustatory tension. The ancient bush-trained vines, approaching eighty years of age, preserve precious ungrafted rootstocks, an authentic agricultural heritage of the area. The name of the wine pays homage to the ancient rural transit routes once called Quota Nave.

How it is produced

After the harvest at the end of October, the process involves spontaneous fermentation in vats, triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts. The must macerates for fifteen days on the skins, without any intervention to control the temperature. The subsequent ageing takes place in cement tanks and used barrels, a technical choice aimed at consolidating the wine without imparting extraneous woody aromas. This low-intervention approach preserves the expressive clarity and natural integrity of the varieties used.

History and Curiosities

Quota N evokes the historic rural routes known as “quota nave”, with its roots deep in the north-western slopes of Etna. In Contrada Nave, at an altitude of 1,070 metres, this Terre Siciliane IGT is born from ancient bush-trained vines cultivated using natural methods. The rare survival of ungrafted vines makes this volcanic vineyard a precious agricultural heritage. The elegance of its taste and the dedication to this heroic high-altitude viticulture have been rewarded with the prestigious 92 points from Decanter.

From this winery
Born in 1982 in Tenerife, Eduardo grew up in contact with the family winemaking tradition. Following his passion for the vineyard, he enrolled in Agricultural Engineering and continued his studies in Oenology. A few years later, his curiosity to get to know new territories and compare himself with other producers led him to Sicily.

In 2012, he participated in the grape harvest at Arianna Occhipinti's, and a year later he worked as an oenologist at the Passopisciaro winery, attracted by the volcanic territory. In 2014, he began his work to restore the leased vineyards on Etna's northern slope. In the same year he bottled his first vintage.

Today we work 4.7 ha divided into 9 vineyards at different heights and districts. We continue to recover old vineyards that are 90% cultivated with the traditional alberello system. Today the company believes in the importance of continuous comparison and sharing with other producers, in the knowledge of other territories and other varieties. This is how we try to interpret a territory and make it known within a glass.
