Description
What kind of wine it is
The Toscana Nearco by Col d’Orcia is a still organic red wine, made from a blend of grapes including Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. The twenty-four months of ageing in French oak barrels gives the wine an intense ruby colour and a rich aromatic profile, characterised by notes of blackberry, spices, vanilla and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it stands out for its enveloping tannic texture, balanced by a solid acidity that leads to an elegant finish, ideal for pairing with mature cheeses and game.
Where it comes from
Production takes place in Sant’Angelo in Colle, in the Montalcino area. The vineyards are located at around 350 metres above sea level and benefit from an ideal south and south-west exposure. The character of the Toscana originates from medium-textured soils, rich in calcareous pebbles that provide precision on the palate. The result of the work of a historic winery, this wine faithfully expresses the geological identity of the Sienese terroir.
How it is produced
Temperature-controlled maceration is carried out for twelve to fourteen days in steel vats. This is followed by malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks and the first transfer to wood. During the winter, the separate resting of the various grape varieties ensures natural stabilisation in barrel. The final blending takes place at the end of the ageing process and is followed by a final resting period, essential to achieve perfect structural balance.
History and Curiosities
Produced in Montalcino at an altitude of 350 metres, Nearco di Col d’Orcia is a prestigious organic red Toscana IGT. Made by a historic winery founded in 1933, the 2021 vintage expresses the soul of soils characterised by calcareous pebbles. Its uniqueness lies in a bespoke process: the individual varieties mature separately through a 24-month ageing in French oak barriques. The final blend results in a cut of extreme precision, able to perfectly convey the enveloping identity of this marvellous Sienese territory.

The estate's origins date back to the first half of the 17th century when the family of the Sienese noble knights Della Ciaia established a property in the Sant'Angelo in Colle area that became larger and larger year by year. In the second half of the 19th century, it passed into the hands of the Servadio family and then the Franceschi family.
In 1973, Count Alberto Marone Cinzano took over the estate, intending to contribute to the development and affirmation of Montalcino and its Brunello on world markets.
Our Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento 2016 took second place in the 2024 ‘Enthusiast 100’, the ranking of the best wines of the year signed by the influential American magazine ‘Wine Enthusiast’.
Another wonderful piece of news, which follows Col d'Orcia's nomination as ‘European Winery of the Year’ at the 2024 Wine Star Awards of ‘Wine Enthusiast’ and confirms, for the third consecutive year, our wines at the top of the international rankings and critics. In 2022 the Brunello di Montalcino 2017 entered the top 100 of ‘Wine Spectator’, in 2023 the Poggio al Vento 2016 stood out in the top 100 of ‘James Suckling. Read more
