Description

Wine type

Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino by Frescobaldi is a Tuscan red wine with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status that captures the most authentic essence of Sangiovese. It is distinguished by an enveloping structure, supported by dense and elegant tannins, a vibrant freshness and a distinct savoury and mineral trail. The olfactory profile opens with aromas of raspberry, blackberry and redcurrant, embellished by nuances of violet, spicy notes and balsamic accents. The palate culminates in a warm and persistent finish, the result of fermentation in steel and ageing in wooden barrels.

Origin

This wine originates from the Castelgiocondo estate in Montalcino, situated in the picturesque landscape of the Val d’Orcia. The vineyards, located between 150 and 500 metres above sea level, benefit from an optimal south-west exposure that guarantees the perfect ripening of the grapes. The soils, characterised by a mix of galestro, clays and marls with Pliocene sand insertions, ensure excellent drainage and give the wine concentration and a precise aromatic definition. The significant summer temperature variations contribute to defining an ideal structural balance between freshness and intensity.

Production method

Production begins with a meticulous manual harvest and a careful selection of the best bunches. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with frequent pump-overs, followed by a long maceration on the skins for thirty-two days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for two years in wood, resting in small French oak barrels and in Slavonian oak casks. Further ageing in the bottle completes the evolutionary process, allowing the wine to reach the market five years after the harvest.

Dominated by the ancient tower and the small medieval village, southwest of Montalcino, Tenuta CastelGiocondo is located at an altitude of about 300 metres, an ideal terroir for producing Sangiovese.

The village of Castelgiocondo dominates from above the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which the production of Brunello di Montalcino began in 1800.

The historical importance of the estate is testified by the knight figure shown on Castelgiocondo wine labels, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of Siena's troops, who led the attack on the castle of Montemassi. A historical coincidence that saw the Frescobaldi family begin their centuries-long adventure in the world of wine at the same time as the knight's exploits.
