Description

What kind of wine it is

Villa di Capezzana is an organic red wine produced by Capezzana in the historic Carmignano area. It is created from a harmonious blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in steel and aged in wood, expressing a full-bodied and structured character. The sensory profile opens with clear aromas of black cherry and raspberry, enriched by herbal nuances and delicate spicy notes. On the palate, the texture is supported by ripe and fine tannins, leading the sip towards a persistent finish characterised by an elegant return of sweet liquorice.

Where it comes from

The grapes grow on the hills of Carmignano, in Tuscany, within an estate whose winemaking vocation has been documented since the year 804. The vineyards stretch between 100 and 200 metres above sea level, benefiting from optimal sun exposure, which encourages perfect ripening of the bunches while preserving their natural freshness. The vine roots sink into soils rich in stones, composed of clay, limestone, schist and sandstone. This unique geology gives the wine a pronounced structure and elegance, enhancing the synergy of the grape varieties in this prestigious hillside terroir.

How it is produced

The mechanised harvest respects the specific ripening times of each variety, starting with Sangiovese and finishing with Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel containers, followed by careful maceration on the skins to extract the best polyphenolic components. Malolactic fermentation occurs in French oak, followed by ageing in wood divided between tonneaux and large barrels. The use of non-new wood preserves the purity of the fruit, while a long final rest consolidates the wine’s complex structure, ensuring its longevity.

History and Curiosities

Villa di Capezzana is the emblem of an estate with a winemaking vocation documented as far back as 804. This prestigious red represents the historic wine of the estate, carefully preserved by the Contini Bonacossi family with historic bottles dating back to 1925. Tasting reveals the deep connection with Carmignano DOCG, one of the oldest appellations in the world. The inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon, authorised since 1975, lends charm and longevity to a masterpiece capable of combining Renaissance origins with exceptional quality.

Tenuta di Capezzana is an ancient tradition of the Carmignanese company. Carmignano is one of the oldest towns in Tuscany and the history and fame of its wines are linked to the millennial events of this land.

The vine was already cultivated in Etruscan times, about 3,000 years ago, as shown by the wine containers found among the numerous finds. Then came the Roman era: it was written that the same names of some wineries would derive from Roman names of the era of Silla, when the area was divided and given to veterans; Capezzana would take the name of one of these, Capitus.

In the Florence state archives we found a parchment dated 804: it is a lease contract which documents how already 1200 years ago in Capezzana oil and wine were produced. In the 20s of the last century the Contini Bonacossi family bought Capezzana. Currently the management of the company belongs to Count Ugo's sons, who have divided the tasks in the company: Benedetta works in the cellar in close contact with Vittorio, who also takes care of the wine sector together with his son Gaddo; Filippo takes care of the production of oil and the financial part and Beatrice is the commercial and marketing manager of the company, assisted by her niece Serena. Currently the company has a total area of 670 hectares, of which over 90 are vineyards and 140 are olive groves.

Capezzana is located in the north of Tuscany, in the municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato, 20 km from Florence, between the Montalbano and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. This explains the particularity of its microclimate: in summer the days are hot and followed by cool nights and the rainfall is well distributed throughout the year.
