Description
What kind of wine it is
Alión is a still red wine that embodies the essence of the Ribera del Duero region in Castile and León. Made from Tempranillo grapes, it stands out for its enveloping and modern style. On the palate, it is silky, with balanced acidity and polished tannins leading to a mineral finish. The aromatic profile reveals notes of red fruits, blackberry and plum, interwoven with hints of cocoa, sweet spices and balsamic touches, all enhanced by refined oak ageing.
Where it comes from
The vines grow in the heart of Ribera del Duero, with plots situated at around 750 metres above sea level. In this area, the continental climate is characterised by significant temperature variations, which favour slow ripening and great aromatic concentration. The soils, composed of clay and gravel, impart an intense colour, a defined texture and the distinctive mineral imprint noticeable on tasting. Under the guidance of Vega Sicilia, the vineyards are tended to enhance the purity of the fruit and the unique features of the Spanish landscape.
How it is produced
After a rigorous manual harvest and selection of the bunches, vinification begins with alcoholic fermentation in wooden vats at a controlled temperature. Extraction is carefully managed to ensure rich colour and structural solidity. The wine rests in new French oak barrels, with a period in cement tanks that elegantly refines its texture. A further prolonged ageing follows racking, allowing the flavour profile to harmonise and achieve perfect balance.
History and Curiosities
Born in 1991 from the foresight of the Álvarez family, who lead the Vega Sicilia group, Alión represents the most modern expression of Tempranillo. The 2021 vintage, considered a textbook harvest and signed by President Marta Álvarez, masterfully enhances the purity of the fruit and the authenticity of the region. The meticulous ageing in new French oak barriques, combined with fifteen months of rest in the bottle, gives rise to a red wine widely acclaimed by critics, of rare elegance and enveloping intensity.
