Description

What kind of wine it is

Surmont Riesling is an organic white wine produced by Alois Lageder, a true expression of the grape variety. Produced in the Mitterberg area, it appears a straw yellow colour with slight greenish highlights. The aromatic profile offers a pronounced and slightly aromatic bouquet, dominated by ripe apricot, peach and delicate floral notes. On the palate, it reveals an elegant and lively medium structure, maintaining a dry and dynamic sip. Thanks to its vibrant character, it is an excellent pairing for seafood dishes, such as grilled shellfish and fried fish, but it also perfectly complements white meats and cheeses.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Trentino-Alto Adige, in the province of Bolzano, between the areas of Tiso, Sarnes and Magrè. A central role is played by the Rain di Penone vineyard, characterised by a steep slope and a south-south-east exposure that encourages the gradual ripening of the grapes. The soil is complex, combining moraine and limestone origins in Magrè with volcanic components in the Isarco Valley. To preserve freshness, the Riesling vines are cultivated at over nine hundred metres above sea level, respecting the nature of the variety and enhancing its vibrant territorial character.

How it is produced

The production process begins with a long and meticulous harvest, to pick each parcel at the perfect stage of ripeness. In the winery, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, thus preserving the varietal purity. The wine then undergoes ageing on fine lees in steel for about six months, enriching the balance of flavour without the use of wood. To best appreciate its taut character, it is recommended to serve the wine chilled, at cellar temperature, with no need for decanting.

History and Curiosities

Introduced in South Tyrol in the nineteenth century, Riesling thrives in unique terroirs, between the calcareous soils of Magrè and the volcanic lands of the Isarco Valley. Today, the vines of the steep Rain di Penone vineyard, cultivated at over 900 metres above sea level following the principles of organic farming, sink their roots into ancient moraine deposits. This profound holistic synergy leads to a long and meticulous autumn harvest, resulting in an elegant IGT Mitterberg that perfectly expresses its most vibrant territorial character.
