Alsace is a land of truly exceptional and exciting white wines whose fame has been deserved and established for centuries. The Gruss family has been here at least since the 17th century. This is testified by the family's coat of arms, with two keys derived from the name of the old inn located right in the centre of the picturesque village of Eguisheim, which was then bought to make it the family farm. At the beginning of the last century, however, Eugène Gruss began trading in wine and his son Joseph, after the Second World War, decided to buy vineyards to produce and bottle his wine. Then, his son Bernard took charge of the company and expanded it further. Today, the fourth generation with the young André manages the company, who is a very skilled oenologist and has given a crucial managerial turn to the winery in renovating the winery and the equipment while respecting the tradition.
All the vineyards are organically cultivated. The company avoids using weedkillers and employs home-grown compost for fertiliser and grassing in alternating rows. The vineyards have a yield that varies from a minimum of 25 quintals per hectare, for the Grains Nobles selections, to 80 quintals for the grapes destined for sparkling wines. Harvesting is still done strictly by hand. For the rest, only 'common sense': traditional vinification in old oak barrels that were bought by great-grandfather Joseph. There are no hidden secrets for a production that reflects the terroir and grape varieties of Alsace, the result of an interpretation that is attentive to the terroir and faithful to tradition.
