Description

What kind of olive oil is this?

Zisola Sicilian Olio Extra Vergine d’Oliva by Mazzei is a Protected Geographical Indication extra virgin olive oil made from a blend of Moresca, Ogliarola Messinese, and Nocellara Etnea olives. Cultivated in south-eastern Sicily, this oil offers a soft and full-bodied profile. A meticulous cold-pressing method perfectly captures its essential vegetal freshness, ensuring a balanced and harmonious taste. Distinct notes of olive and tomato emerge naturally, making it incredibly versatile for enhancing roast fish, grilled asparagus, fresh salads, and vegetarian starters.

Geographical origin

The fruit for this oil originates from the Zisola estate, located near Noto in the heart of Sicily. The property spans twenty-four hectares, nestled in a landscape where olive groves flourish alongside fragrant citrus and almond trees. The geographical origin links the harvest directly to this specific zone, utilising exceptional local cultivars. This distinctive terroir creates an authentic profile, consistently delivering a smooth texture and recognisable vegetal notes.

Production process

Zisola produces this oil by carefully harvesting and selecting regional olives. The blend is predominantly Moresca, supported by Ogliarola Messinese and Nocellara Etnea. A strict mechanical extraction process is used without heat, preserving the pure aromatic definition of the fruit. This careful technique ensures a rich, harmonious palate with a distinctively soft mouthfeel. It is an excellent culinary choice, perfectly complementing roast fish and vibrant vegetable dishes.

The estate is located in South-East Sicily, the land of origin of the Nero d'Avola vine only a few steps from Noto, famous for its baroque buildings and Unesco World Heritage Site. The Mazzei identified the latent potential of this land rich with history, culture, and charm, and started and ambitious winemaking project in 2003.

A property of 50 hectares, the area extends around the 3 buildings "bagli" of the estate, of which the main one enjoys a wonderful view over Noto and the surrounding "gardens" cultivated with vineyards, citrus trees, olives, and almonds. Here a small but efficient winery is provided with stainless steel vats with temperature control for winemaking and about 350 oak barrels for fining the wines.
