Description

What kind of wine it is

Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Cuvée Henri III Extra Brut by R.H. Coutier is a wine of great precision, made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes. Produced using the Traditional Method, it stands out for the decision not to carry out malolactic fermentation, thus preserving a vibrant and incisive freshness. Ageing on the lees encourages an elegant aromatic complexity, where notes of apple, pear and plum blend with toasted hints and memories of brioche. The attack, fresh and powerful, evolves into a creamy texture, leading to a long, balanced finish supported by a strict acidic backbone.

Where it comes from

The grapes are grown in Ambonnay, a renowned Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims and a prime area for Pinot Noir. The vineyards are planted on chalky soils along well-exposed slopes, ensuring optimal ripening of the bunches and a vibrant structure. The R.H. Coutier winery manages plots with vines around forty years old, carefully following the rhythms of nature. This agronomic approach reduces interventions in the vineyard to respect the plant's balance, delivering in the glass the purest expression of the terroir of origin.

How it is produced

Vinification follows the Traditional Method, resulting in an Extra Brut profile of utmost precision. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation, a choice that enhances its lively freshness and gives dynamism to the tasting experience. A long seven-year maturation on the lees enriches its structure, developing an enveloping texture with notes of ripe fruit and subtle evolved nuances. Enhanced by a fine and elegant perlage, it pairs beautifully with starters, shellfish, structured fish dishes and flavourful cheeses, offering a persistent and refreshing finish.

History and Curiosities

Born in 1995 in the renowned Grand Cru of Ambonnay, the Cuvée Henri III embodies the R.H. Coutier family's deep commitment to Pinot Noir. For five generations, the estate has cultivated forty-year-old vines on chalky soils, adopting sustainable practices to enhance the authenticity of the terroir. This prestigious wine stands out as the only label from the estate vinified without malolactic fermentation, thus preserving a vibrant acidic freshness. Its complex structure is sealed by a lengthy maturation of at least 7 years on the lees.

For over five generations, our family estate has flourished on the sun‑kissed slopes of Ambonnay, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims Grand Cru. Here, chalky soils and perfect exposures create a terroir of rare distinction.

Across 9.3 hectares and 40 unique plots, our vines—averaging nearly four decades in age—tell a story of tradition and innovation. While Pinot Noir reigns supreme in this celebrated region, our estate stands apart: one third of our vineyards are Chardonnay, first planted in 1948 by Henri Coutier. Today, we proudly continue this pioneering spirit, crafting blends of remarkable finesse, balance, and character.

Since 1981, Nathalie and René have guided the estate with passion and precision. In 2014, their son Antoine joined them, carrying forward the family’s vision as the fifth generation of R.H. Coutier Champagne.

Our philosophy is simple yet profound: "as little as possible." By minimizing intervention, we allow the purest expression of our terroir to shine. Every choice in the vineyard and cellar is made with respect for nature, reducing our impact on the living world around us. In 2020, we began our journey toward certified organic viticulture, reaffirming our commitment to sustainability and authenticity.
