Description

Capatosta Morellino Scansano is a still organic red wine with the Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) designation. Produced in the southern Maremma region of Tuscany from native grape varieties, it is one of the most important expressions of the Maremma terroir. The vines planted in the countryside of the municipality of Scansano, on a medium-low, breezy, and sunny hillside, in a calcareous soil rich in skeleton and alluvial stones, produce highly aromatic fruit. A robust red wine produced only in the Scansano area and part of the province of Grosseto. Capatosta Morellino Scansano is one of the most representative wines of the Poggio Argentiera winery. Its first vintage was 1998. A highly prized wine, Morellino is the product of a blend of Sangiovese (85%), Alicante (5%), and Ciliegiolo (10%). The grapes, harvested strictly by hand and placed in 20-kilo crates, will undergo the vinification process with macerations lasting just over two weeks and fermentations at controlled temperatures in truncated cone-shaped oak vats, after which it will undergo the aging process in oak barrels. Before being bottled, the wine will age for a period of 15 months. After this period, it will be bottled; at this point it will rest for another 15 months, then it will be released to the market. The result is a balanced, elegant wine with great aromatic finesse, which has won numerous important awards. Highly praised by critics and consumers both nationally and internationally, Morellino can be cellared without any particular problems for up to 10 years.

Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of the Adua farm, a property which went back to the early 20th century when the Maremma marshes began to be drained.

The 15 acres (six hectares) of vineyards began to produce grapes for a Morellino di Scansano and the new cellar was built. In 2001 the property was enlarged with the acquisition of another farm, located in Baccinello, a hillside zone in the township of Scansano. New vineyards were added to the older but prestigious existing ones, and today the winery owns over 50 acres (21 hectares) of vineyards all in the Morellino di Scansano appellation.
