Description
What kind of wine it is
Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Valferana is a highly charming red wine from Piedmont, a pure expression of Nebbiolo grapes, locally known as Spanna. Gattinara reveals itself in the glass with a garnet colour enhanced by subtle orange highlights. On the palate, it offers a smooth and enveloping flavour profile, supported by silky tannins that define its structured character. The bouquet stands out for its refined mineral and ferrous notes, making it ideal to pair with red meats and game, as well as mature cheeses.
Where it comes from
This red wine is born in the renowned Valferana vineyard, historically known as Val Florana, located in the municipality of Gattinara. The vineyard stretches at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif, whose proximity creates a perfect microclimate for slow and deep ripening. Thanks to optimal sun exposure, the grapes acquire a marked territorial character. These unique geographical conditions give the wine clear aromatic hints of rhubarb, medicinal herbs, and delicate nuances of red flowers.
How it is produced
The meticulous vinification process begins with destemming and gentle crushing of the grapes. Fermentation takes place in cement vats at a controlled temperature for about twenty-two days, using indigenous yeasts and retaining a portion of whole grapes. The wine then rests for three years in large oak barrels, an essential stage for refining its elegance and complexity. The production cycle concludes with a further period in cement and a final maturation in glass, ensuring the wine achieves maximum harmony of flavour.
History and Curiosities
The Gattinara DOCG Vigna Valferana has its roots at the foot of Monte Rosa, in the ancient vineyard once known as Val Florana. In this ideal microclimate, the clusters of Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) develop an extraordinary mineral finesse. Nervi Conterno enhances the raw material through lengthy ageing in oak and old cement vats, giving the wine silky tannins and pure elegance. Awarded 96 points by Vinous, the 2022 vintage guarantees exceptional longevity, promising superb evolution in the decades to come.

Founded in 1905 by Luigi Nervi, the winery has always been a benchmark for Nebbiolo production in Valsesia, also known as the greenest valley in Italy. The vineyards stretch across spectacular purple-hued slopes, due to the presence of quartz porphyry of volcanic origin, which gives the wines a distinct character compared to those from the Langhe or Roero regions.
One of the estate’s most iconic crus is Vigna Molsino, a natural amphitheater facing south, cradling the vines and allowing for slow, complete ripening. In this unique setting, the winery experienced a major turning point in 2018 with the arrival of Roberto Conterno—already renowned for his Barolo production at the Giacomo Conterno winery in Monforte d’Alba. With the acquisition of Nervi and its 27 hectares of vineyards, Conterno chose to invest in the potential of Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont, helping to elevate the prestige of Gattinara DOCG on an international scale.
