Description
What kind of wine it is
The Chianti Classico produced in Tuscany by Fontodi is an organic red wine with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin, made from Sangiovese grapes and aged in oak barrels. In the glass, it reveals intense aromas of plum, cherry, and violet, enriched by notes of leather, blond tobacco, and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it offers a smooth texture and ample fruit, balanced by fine tannins and a lively acidity, with a voluminous and elegant structure that culminates in a pleasantly spicy finish. This wine pairs harmoniously with savoury dishes, particularly enhancing game, roast meats, and fresh pasta starters with tomato sauce.
Where it comes from
This wine comes to life in Panzano in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico, in a historically prestigious area known as the Conca d’Oro. The grapes are grown in the vineyards of the Fontodi estate, led by Giovanni Manetti, which spans ninety hectares. The vines are trained using the Guyot system with a density of six thousand vines per hectare, an agronomic choice aimed at promoting the highest quality of the clusters. The organic management of the vineyards results in a clear and precise aromatic profile, capable of reflecting the authentic identity of its area of origin.
How it is produced
The winemaking process follows a minimal intervention approach to best enhance the raw material. The must undergoes spontaneous fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, naturally triggered by indigenous yeasts. The subsequent maceration on the skins lasts for at least three weeks, a fundamental stage for extracting colour and structure while preserving the elegance of the Sangiovese. Ageing continues for at least eighteen months in French oak barrels, including selections from the Tronçais and Allier forests, which impart a refined spicy note. This long rest ensures the wine has an excellent ageing potential.
History and Interesting Facts

Fontodi is a certified organic farm and covers 170 hectares, of which more than 80 are planted with vines. The principles of naturalness and sustainability inspire the agriculture that is practised: not only are no synthetic chemical products used, but an attempt is made to make the most of the company's internal resources by reducing external inputs. For example, the vineyards are fertilised using compost produced by combining pruning residues and manure from the farm's own Chianina breeding. Respecting the environment produces better, cleaner wines with a better expression of the terroir. Read more
