Description

This Langhe Nebbiolo DOC is a still red wine produced in the Elio Grasso winery. Nebbiolo boasts very ancient origins: its first mentions in historical sources date back to the late 13th century, and they began to become regular starting in the 19th century. Production takes place in Piedmont, in the Langhe region, specifically in Monferrato d'Alba, at an altitude of about 350 meters above sea level. The name Nebbiolo appears to derive from "nebbia" (mist), although the origin of this denomination is still uncertain: it could derive from the opaque color of its grapes, due to a high concentration of bloom, or perhaps it refers to the autumn fogs that characterize the harvest period, given the late ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes. The Langhe Nebbiolo DOC Elio Grasso is produced exclusively using grapes from 100% Nebbiolo vines; being a DOC wine, it can only be produced in the province of Cuneo. Sunny, hilly terrain that is not excessively humid is preferred for growing its grapes; the harvest falls in the first ten days of October. The vinification takes place through alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, all at a controlled temperature. The wine then rests in steel tanks before being bottled between the months of April and May.

The vineyards owned by the Grasso family are the estate’s greatest assets. The area where they are located has always been considered outstanding wine country, as is demonstrated by the inclusion of our holdings in the map of the finest vineyards drawn up by the great historian, Lorenzo Fantini, in the early 20th century.

In the early 1980s we decided to go back to our origins as grape growers, well aware that our work did not stop at the end of the row of vines. We had no illusions that we were inventing anything: we merely wanted to comply with the best in the traditions and work of our predecessors, without any preconceived ideas. The first logical consequence was the decision, from 1978, to vinify and bottle separately grapes from our various vineyards.
