Description

What kind of wine it is

The Rosso Prelit by Damijan Podversic is a still red wine from Collio, the result of a refined blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby hue, heralding a complex bouquet of sour cherry jam, blueberries and bramble blackberries, enhanced by balsamic notes of eucalyptus, black liquorice, pepper, cumin and humus. On the palate, it offers a savoury and fresh sip, supported by a pleasant softness and well-integrated tannins that lead to a harmonious finish consistent with the aromatic profile.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from Monte Calvario, in the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The vineyards, facing south at an altitude between one hundred and ten and one hundred and forty metres, allow for ideal ripening. The vines sink their roots into ponca and opoka soils, composed of marl and sandstone, which give the wine a distinctive mineral texture and marked freshness. The agronomic management involves a low yield per hectare to favour structural balance and a high aromatic concentration, offering a faithful and authentic expression of the territory.

How it is produced

The vinification of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon begins with a forty-day fermentation on the skins in truncated conical oak vats, ensuring balanced and deep extraction. Afterwards, the wine matures for three years in oak barrels, consolidating the tannic structure and smoothing out any roughness without compromising the integrity of the fruit. The process concludes with one year of bottle ageing, an essential step to harmonise every component and give the wine its characteristic smoothness on the palate.

History and Curiosities

The name Prelit means “poured” and encapsulates the passion of Damijan Podversic, a winemaker devoted to Collio since 1988. This masterful blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is born from the prized ponca and opoka soils of Monte Calvario, benefiting from an ideal southern exposure. A wine that expresses an authentic connection with Friuli-Venezia Giulia, resulting in a red of rare excellence that has received prestigious accolades, such as 93 points from Vinous. Savour the fruit of meticulous work, capable of bringing out the extraordinary vocation of the Collio DOC at its best.

On mount Calvario there were some old, abandoned vines and I started to buy up some small plots of land.

Today on these lands we have the most important vinyards, six hectares planted with ribolla gialla, malvasia, friulano, merlot e cabernet sauvignon.

We have another half hectare at San Floriano, planted with chardonnay, which was part of my grandfather’s holding. We have a further two hectares rented at Gradiscutta with chardonnay, malvasia e friulano. For the past twenty years we’ve had at Piedimonte another one and half hectares with friulano, chardonnay e malvasia.
