Description

What kind of spirit is this

Chartreuse Verte by the Carthusian monks is a French herbal liqueur crafted from 130 botanicals, produced through maceration and distillation in copper stills, followed by ageing in oak casks. It presents a mentholated and balsamic bouquet with distinct notes of liquorice, anise, violet, mint and basil. On the palate, the 55% ABV is balanced by a smooth texture, releasing hints of lime and candied banana before concluding with a long, precise and bitter finish. It is best enjoyed neat, over ice, or in classic cocktails such as the Last Word.

Where it comes from

Produced in Voiron in the French Rhône region, this spirit is rooted in the historical expertise of the Carthusian monks. The foundation of Chartreuse Verte rests upon a seventeenth-century manuscript, with continuous monastic production dating back to 1764. Its creation relies on a secret recipe, the exact details of which are known to only two monks at any given time. This rigorous supervision ensures an authentic aromatic signature, defining a profile rich in alpine herbs, resinous pine and oriental spices that reflects its unique heritage.

How it is produced

The process begins with a meticulous selection of one hundred and thirty botanicals, which are carefully infused and macerated in alcohol. This mixture is then distilled in copper stills through a small-batch process to capture the ethereal, mentholated character of the plants. Following distillation, the spirit is matured for at least three years in large French oak casks. This resting period allows the sweetness, alcoholic warmth and bitter nuances to integrate perfectly, yielding a structured liqueur that retains its natural colour and profound depth.

History and Heritage

Crafted by Carthusian monks since 1764, Chartreuse Verte originated from a 17th-century manuscript detailing an alchemical ‘elixir of long life’. This legendary liqueur follows a closely guarded secret recipe of 130 botanical ingredients, known only to two monks at any one time. Renowned for its vibrant and natural emerald-green colour, the spirit is produced under strict monastic supervision and matured for at least three years in French oak casks. This time-honoured process perfectly preserves its profound herbal complexity and celebrates a truly prestigious heritage.

130 herbs, flowers and spices in different dosages and formulas make it possible to make two of the oldest liqueurs in the world: the yellow and green Chartreuse. Two monks of the Carthusian order are the only holders of the secret of production, 100% concentrated near Voiron in the French Alps. All the distillery's liqueurs are aged in large casks and, in the case of the VEPs, in small casks.

Entering the cellars and the Chartreuse distillery is like going back in time: only natural raw materials, distillation and infusion processes, no preservatives or colouring agents, ageing for more than three years in wood, selection of the best ageing methods to become VEP, recipe and monastic production, the link with the land, the French Alps.
