Description
What kind of spirit is this
Benromach Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky by Benromach Distillery is a structured and balanced Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Scotland, crafted from barley and pure spring water. This lightly peated spirit is hand-distilled in copper pot stills and aged in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, followed by a finish in European oak ex-Oloroso casks. Displaying a striking golden amber colour, it offers aromas of apple, pear, vanilla, and dark honey, while the palate unfolds with flavours of malted cereal, stewed fruit, and warm toffee. Bottled at 43% ABV, it delivers a full-bodied finish complemented by robust oak and an elegant touch of soft peat smoke.
Where it comes from
The origins of this spirit are rooted in Forres, located within the renowned Speyside region of Scotland. Produced by Benromach, the process relies on high-quality local raw materials. Pure water is drawn from the Chapelton spring, nestled in the Romach Hills, while the barley is sourced from farms near the distillery, establishing a genuine connection to the land. This careful selection of regional ingredients creates a distinctive profile that balances a fruit-led character with a highly controlled touch of peat smoke.
How it is produced
Crafting begins with malted barley, naturally infused with peat smoke. The spirit is hand-distilled in small batches using two historic copper pot stills to ensure optimal flavour. A complex maturation follows, with the liquid resting in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks. The whisky then undergoes a finishing period in European oak casks that previously held Oloroso Sherry. This meticulous cask programme builds a smooth structure, enriching the spirit with rich Sherry notes and a harmonious depth of malt and fruit.
History and Heritage
Founded in the Speyside region in 1898, the Benromach distillery has a rich heritage. It navigated numerous ownership changes, surviving the Prohibition era and the Great Depression of the 1930s. An interesting fact is its zero-mile production approach: pristine water is drawn directly from the Chapelton spring in the Romach Hills, whilst barley is sourced exclusively from neighbouring farms. The spirit is still traditionally hand-distilled using two historic, large copper pot stills.

We make it this way to give our whisky its classic Speyside character: beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke. Making whisky by hand is a rare craft these days. Here you can read and watch our short stories about how we go about it.
For the full story about our families roots in Benromach, watch this film and Keith, Ewen, Stuart, Michael and Laura will tell you how we revived a lost taste of Speyside. We call it Taste Rediscovered. Read more
