Description
What kind of wine it is
The Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia is a red wine of great structure, an authentic expression of Nebbiolo grapes in the Michet and Lampia varieties. On the nose, it reveals a deep olfactory profile, characterised by notes of leather, vanilla pod, rose petals, plum and citrus. On the palate, it is taut and fresh, supported by a high acidity that enhances aromas of cherry, anise and subtle hints of oregano. Naturally predisposed to long ageing, this wine requires time to fully express its extraordinary organoleptic potential. Its refined complexity makes it the ideal pairing for intense meat dishes, game and mature cow’s milk cheeses.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the historic Bussia area, in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, a prime area for the production of Barolo in Piedmont. The vineyards are located on hillsides at around four hundred metres above sea level, on soil composed of calcareous marl alternating with layers of sand. This particular soil configuration ensures the wine has gustatory tension and a precise aromatic definition. The Aldo Conterno winery manages these lands directly, continuing a winemaking history that began in the 1920s in a region whose connection with oenology is ancient and profound, dating back to the time of Italian unification.
How it is produced
Production begins in mid-October with a rigorous manual harvest and selection of the best bunches in the vineyard. Vinification involves fermentation with skin maceration in steel tanks at a controlled temperature for about thirty days. The wine is also subjected to repeated rackings. After an initial period in steel, the wine matures in large Slavonian oak barrels for over two years. This long ageing process allows the tannins to soften and defines a solid structure, encouraging an elegant sensory evolution over time.
History and Curiosities
Born on the historic hills of Monforte d’Alba, Aldo Conterno’s Barolo Bussia embodies a winemaking vocation that began in 1920. This noble Barolo DOCG has its roots in the history of the Unification of Italy in 1861, when Cavour chose it as the official wine. The Nebbiolo grapes, grown at an altitude of 400 metres on sandy and calcareous soils, ensure an impeccable structure. Carefully aged in Slavonian oak barrels, the wine releases intense aromas of rose petals and leather, celebrating authentic Piedmontese craftsmanship in every glass.
