Chateau de la Maltroye

The oldest documents are Chassagne-Montrachet an old Gallo-Roman village, entered in cartulary of the abbey of Saint-Seine in 886, as the Cassaneas or Cassania. Its origin could come from the following etymology: Cassaneas Cassania or designating a small cassine or cottage or house cassius. For some, the old Gallic term means a place planted with oaks.
Chassagne had to endure the hardships of the war between the Duchy of Burgundy and the Kingdom of France. Burned in 1476 by the troops of Louis XI after his lord had embraced the cause of Mary of Burgundy, heiress of Charles the Bold.

The village rises from the ashes under the influence of Francis of Ferrières who built a chapel dedicated to Saint Marc, origin of the present church.

The Cluny monks who founded the Priory Morgeot, call the land value and replant vines whose first were planted from 281 by the Roman Emperor Probus in the hamlet of Morgeot.
Before 1000, the village derived its glory Clos Saint Jean, owned by the Benedictine abbey Saint-Jean-le-Grand to Autun founded by Brunhilda in 589.

The first written traces of the life of the village date back to the revolution with February 24, 1791, the creation of cadastre and renovation of the vineyard. This whole revolutionary period is narrated by Charles Paquelin, wine columnist, who recorded life in the village between 1789 and 1806.

As for the name "Montrachet", which attaches a renowned ancient and famous, it is mentioned in the title of the Abbey of Maizières in 1252 "Mont Rachaz" in 1742 and "Montrachet" in 1473. It is named after its features: A Mount skinned, bald, rocky where there were growing at the time that boxwood and other thorny bushes.

The Decree of 27 November 1879 authorizes the name of Chassagne-le-Haut is replaced by Chassagne-Montrachet (pronocer Morachet). The name of the added Haut Chassagne is not explained, since the village is rather plain on a rise, while the name of the famous Montrachet reminder climate vine that produced the first white wine in the world.
The name of Chassagne-Montrachet therefore serve to communicate more and more this great wine, and therefore help the development of trade.
