Molise

(Italy)

Little Molise, has not yet found a way to make the most of its potential.
Climate, soil and altitude are ideal for the cultivation of the vine, but the high production costs, low profitability and a production that records one of the lowest yields of the whole country, removing man from the vineyard. Even the production is very low and in 2009 it was about 319,000 hl of wine, obtained in particular from Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Aglianico, with a little cabernet, Pinot Noir and Barbera, as well as cherry and big cow.
Among the white grape varieties are mainly Trebbiano toscano and abruzzese, malvasia bianca di Candia, as well as pinot bianco, pinot grigio, chardonnay, bombino bianco and moscato bianco.

Soil and climate
The climate is typically continental with cold winters and hot summers. Snowfall abound in mountainous areas. The rains are scarce in the summer months. The climate is mild on the coast.
History
The fought historical situation of this Region has left some profound signs that time has not yet healed. In history Molise was part with the Abruzzi in a Roman region. Subsequently, this territory became the land of the Samnites; conquered by the Lombards, Saracens, Byzantines, to end later the land of Frederick II. It was then that the name Molise took hold, because among the different fiefdoms in which it was divided, the Counts Molise prevailed. Later in the region an economic-social collapse fell, which continued even after the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, where Molise together with the Abruzzi formed a single Region. In 1963 Molise separated from the Abruzzi to be independent.
Typical products
Until recently, Molise, which had never distinguished itself in making quality wines, has recently had some DOC areas: Molise, Biferno and Pentro that produce reds, whites and rosés. Aglianico also grows in Molise, where Di Majo Norante performs an excellent job with these grapes, as well as Montepulciano and Falanghina.
Typical dishes
Like Abruzzo, Molise draws its products from the sea, from agriculture and pastures, remaining essentially authentic to the rural culture, also taking into account that the accidentality of the soil, its low fertility, have formed the basic factors of the scarce development of the region. A menu of Molise begins, in general, with very tasty mixed meats, such as the soppressata, the fennel sausages or the black pepper preserved in the fat, the meats, salami rich in chilli, the nirvi and musse, typical appetizer of the area of Campobasso with the nose of Vutello. Among the first courses are the typical maccheroni alla chitarra served with lamb ragù and peppers, or with fresh tomatoes and the ever present chilli, fusilli, rectangular pasta rolled up.
