Description

What kind of wine it is

Peloro Rosso by Le Casematte interprets the territory of Terre Siciliane through a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nocera. Characterised by a bright ruby colour with violet highlights, it reveals persistent aromas of small red fruits, flowers, carob and liquorice, set against a pleasant spicy background. On the palate, it stands out for its freshness and the intensity of the fruit, supported by a dense and lively tannic structure, making it ideal to pair with flavourful first courses, red meats and mature cheeses.

Where it comes from

This wine originates from the coastal setting of the Strait of Messina, in the renowned area of Faro Superiore. The vineyards, cultivated using the espalier and bush-trained systems, are located near some historic Second World War bunkers. The sea breeze defines the character of the grapes, allowing this expression of Terre Siciliane to offer an authentic snapshot of the terroir and a flavour profile of great territorial precision.

How it is produced

After the manual harvest carried out in September, vinification takes place in truncated conical steel tanks with regular punch-downs for a month. Once the wine has rested on the fine lees, blending is carried out. Maturation involves a combination of steel and a targeted passage in new wooden barrels for three months, thus enriching the structure of the wine. A final refinement in glass for a further three months allows every component to harmonise, giving balance and elegance to each sip.

History and Curiosities

Founded in 2008 on the Strait of Messina, the Le Casematte winery cultivates its vineyards around some historic Second World War posts. The Peloro Rosso 2023, expertly crafted by oenologist Carlo Ferrini, is born from the union of the prized Nerello Mascalese and Nocera grapes. After a meticulous manual harvest, the wine matures in tonneaux and then in bottle, acquiring great charm and elegance. Awarded 91 points by James Suckling, this Terre Siciliane IGT captivates with its aromas of small red fruits, spicy notes and a dense tannic structure, making it perfect for enhancing meat dishes and cheeses.

The very young winery Le Casematte, is the crowning achievement of the dream of its founder Gianfranco Sabbatino, by now a prisoner of boundless love and passion for the fruits of the vine. The winery is located in the beautiful scenery of the Strait of Messina, in the village of Faro Superiore. It owes its name to the presence of two casemates, small forts used as shelters for sentries dating back to World War II placed in defence of the territory, which insist on the most significant plot of land cultivated with vines. The full extension of the vineyard of about 4 hectares is grown with varieties of Nerello Mascalese, Cappuccio, Nocera and Nero d'Avola in the percentages regulated by the Faro DOC specification. The Faro DOC is a very small DOC recognised in 1976, whose total extension is at most 30 hectares. The entire technical aspect is entrusted to the oenologist Fabrizio Zardini, originally from Cortina d'Ampezzo (Belluno, Veneto region) but who has been working with various Sicilian wineries for years.
