Description

What kind of wine it is

San Lorenzo is a still red wine from Etna Rosso, produced by Girolamo Russo. The result of a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, it reveals an intense ruby red colour in the glass. The aromatic profile opens with notes of red fruit and flowers, with clear hints of cherry and morello cherry, followed by aromatic herbs, balsamic essences and nuances of vanilla and tobacco. On the palate, it displays an excellent structure, accompanied by silky tannins that provide a defined fullness of flavour and a long mineral persistence.

Where it comes from

The roots of this wine lie on the northern slope of Mount Etna, within the territory of Castiglione di Sicilia. The vines grow on a distinctive volcanic soil, an element that defines the identity and balance of the production. This soil composition gives the grapes an authentic character, faithfully reflecting the features of the landscape. Originating from such a specific terroir gives the tasting a clear mineral character, linking the wine’s profile to the volcano and enhancing the expressiveness of this Sicilian denomination.

How it is produced

The vinification carried out by Girolamo Russo involves a careful selection of the bunches, aiming to preserve the aromatic integrity of the grapes. The result is a structured and enveloping sip. To best appreciate the various olfactory nuances, it is recommended to decant for one hour, the ideal time to release the full expression of the bouquet. Thanks to its balanced profile, this red pairs perfectly with rich dishes based on beef, lamb and game, and is also well suited to enhance mature cheeses.

The Girolamo Russo estate was founded in 2005 by Giuseppe Russo, in memory of his late father. The family are native of Passopisciaro, one of the key villages at the heart of the rebirth of Etna’s most important grape variety, Nerello Mascalese.
This is the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
The Russos have 26 hectares of land in and around Passopisciaro, with 15 hectares of vineyards surrounded by olive and hazelnut groves. The vineyards are high up, between 650 and 780 metres above sea level, inland from the beautiful town of Taormina. Many of the free-standing bush vines are over 80 years old, surviving in harmony with Etna’s black, mineral-rich volcanic soil.
Giuseppe works the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. He vinifies each parcel separately, seeking out their individual identities in a series of wines that reflect the diverse character of their terroirs.
Some lava flows are very recent, too recent even to plant on.
The area is broken up into sectors known as ‘contradas’. Each contrada has a name and is linked to one of Etna’s townships.
