Description

What kind of spirit is this?

Amaro Proibito is an artisanal bitter liqueur produced by Foletto in Trentino-Alto Adige, with an alcohol content of 30%. Its profile reveals a medicinal character, defined by herbaceous nuances and vibrant Garda lemons. On the palate, the spirit offers a smooth entry that develops into a pronounced bitter edge, culminating in a long, structured finish.

Geographical origin

Hailing from a small Trentino valley above Lake Garda, this spirit is crafted by Foletto, a distillery established in 1850. The setting allows the liqueur to reflect Alpine herbal influences alongside the distinctive citrus notes of the lake. This unique environment naturally blends balsamic notes with bright lemon accents, conveying a clean and defined mountainous origin.

Production process

This spirit is based on a historic recipe developed by pharmacist Achille Foletto. Its artisanal production relies on the meticulous selection and precise processing of botanicals to achieve profound aromatic complexity. This extraction method balances floral elements with a persistent bitterness, ensuring the vibrant citrus and herbaceous tones deliver a bold, decisive profile.

History and interesting facts

Steeped in legend, Amaro Proibito Foletto carries the heritage of a Trentino distillery founded in 1850. Created in 1943 by pharmacist Achille Foletto, this artisanal bitter liqueur was once delivered secretly by bicycle and enjoyed clandestinely by hospital patients. Presented in an elegant apothecary bottle, it reveals a profound blend of medicinal and balsamic notes enriched by vibrant Garda lemons. Its herbaceous profile delivers a rounded, assertive sip with a distinct bitter edge, honouring its forbidden origins through a long, structured finish.

The Foletto distillery is located in a small valley in Trentino above Lake Garda, precisely in Pieve di Ledro in the province of Trento.

The distillery has an ancient tradition combined with a passion for liqueurs, herbs and innovation. The Foletto family has passed on this passion and care over time, ensuring that syrups and liqueurs are produced with the same care and professionalism as centuries ago.

The history of the Foletto family is certainly a captivating one: starting out as a pharmacy and pharmaceutical laboratory, the Foletto family began to expand their business into the production of liqueurs and syrups in the late 1800s.

The Foletto pharmacists have handed down from father to son this passion for truly artisanal things, continuing to produce syrups and liqueurs today with the same care and professionalism that they have done for centuries.

A small exhibition of the equipment used in the early 1900s has been open to the public since 2000 (renovated in August 2011 to include the old premises and furniture of the pharmacy, the original furnishings of which date back about 125 years).
