Description

What kind of wine it is

The Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu from Clos Saint Antonin is an organic red wine with controlled designation of origin from the Rhône Valley. The result of a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah from fifty-year-old vines, it displays an intense ruby colour in the glass and aromas of black raspberry, cherry, liquorice and toasted earth. On the palate, it is fleshy and structured, with dense tannins and well-balanced acidity. After ageing in oak barrels, the sip evolves into a long and persistent finish, enriched with notes of chocolate, making it ideal for pairing with game and stews.

Where it comes from

The area of origin is located in the southern Rhône, between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. The vineyards occupy the highest plots of the Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu area. The vines grow on a complex terroir, consisting of gravelly plateaus, red clays and silty marls. This composition encourages optimal ripening and a compact structure, ensuring excellent ten-year ageing potential. The estate operates in full compliance with organic farming principles.

How it is produced

Production begins with manual harvesting and careful selection of the bunches. After destemming, fermentation takes place in cement vats. The twenty-five day maceration ensures the phenolic extraction necessary to define the body of the wine. Ageing lasts twelve months and follows distinct paths: Grenache matures in large oak barrels, while Syrah and Mourvèdre rest in smaller barrels. The result is a profound wine, able to balance fruity density with delicate spicy nuances.

History and Curiosities

With roots dating back to the 18th century, the historic Clos Saint Antonin estate has been managed by the Sabon family since 2014. This excellent red is produced in Jonquières, within the prestigious Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu appellation. On a prime fifteen-hectare terroir located between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, the estate cultivates vines around 50 years old with full respect for the ecosystem, as evidenced by its strict organic certification. An expression that combines historical heritage and sustainability.

In the heart of Provence, not far from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, St Antonin has overlooked the Vaucluse region for centuries. Located at the highest point of the Plan de Dieu appellation, the estate covers 15 hectares of enclosed vineyards surrounding an 18th-century Provençal farmhouse.

A natural promontory, the estate offers breathtaking views of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Mont Ventoux and the Rhône Valley plain.

Acquired in 2014 by the Sabon family, who already owned Domaine de la Janasse, the estate is located in the commune of Jonquières, at the highest point and on the edge of the Plan de Dieu appellation. Today, St Antonin is a traditional family-run business, managed with respect for the terroir, the environment and future generations.
