Description

Chianti is a still red wine, especially famous in the Siena area of Tuscany. Originally produced from pure red grapes and consumed in the traditional flask, it first appeared in Italy in 1716 and for many years was confined to the central region of Tuscany, while from the 19th century onwards the wine spread throughout Italy. The most prized varieties are normally Chianti Riserva, Superiore, and Gran Selezione. Particularly popular with tourists from around the world, Chianti is renowned both for its wine and for the gentle slopes of its hills, which border on gentle slopes that provide an ideal combination of heat and exposure: the hard soil, interspersed with clay that retains the water reserves the grapes need, makes the fruit well-nourished and pulpy. The Sangiovese grape has the ability to take on the characteristics of its soil. The mild, sunny climate of this part of Tuscany makes the wine particularly flavorful and savory, particularly bold when grown on friable soil, softer when silty. The Chianti Classico undergoes a maceration process lasting about 20 days in stainless steel, and is aged for 12 to 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a quarter of aging in glass bottles. The Castello Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva comes from the eponymous Castello Monsanto, a producer of wines such as Chianti Classico, Chianti Riserva, and Rosato. It is composed of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo Nero and Colorino. The taste is bold, light and lively: a wine that perfectly conveys the mix between the hardness of the earth and the voluptuousness of the slopes on which its grapes grow.

Today the beating hearts of Castello di Monsanto are Fabrizio and Laura Bianchi. They are the future and have preserved that impressive vision from 60 years ago. Their journey has been shaped with inspiration and choices that are not always easy and taking the road less traveled has made it more surprising albeit uncertain.

Wine in Tuscany was not yet ready for a revolution. Audacity, determination, and foresight were key to pursuing ideas that might have seemed obscure at the time, but later played a large part in the history of Chianti Classico. Today Laura, Fabrizio's daughter, continues what her father, thanks to her grandfather Aldo, started, by transforming longstanding tradition with pride and tenacity. Because the future passes right through here: from what was built yesterday for a better tomorrow.
