Description

A cuirassier. Fleshy, extremely focused. The first vineyard purchased in Serralunga d’Alba. This Cru fully represents Luigi’s love for this village. The vineyard stands on a hill in front of the homonymous church of San Rocco. The clay present in this soil gives the mouth an intense energy. For this reason Serralunga d’Alba is called ‘il corazziere’ (cuirassier, a very skillful and powerful soldier) of the Langhe region. In fact the wine results in great structure, deepness, fully showing an intense complexity.

We have been farming with devotion for 5 generations vines of the three native local varieties only: Dolcetto, Barbera and mostly Nebbiolo to produce DOC and DOCG wines which exalt the typicity, the tradition and the history of our hills. Hills which are world-renowned for their uniqueness and have officially been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. 100 years of history. 100 years since the foundation of Azelia. This has been possible thanks to five generations, starting from an extremely poor reality, the one of the Piedmont of the early 1900.

In 1920 Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family’s vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto. His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and thanks to Luigi’s father, Lorenzo, with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported. The hard work, the great experience and the moral strength can really create something extraordinary.

Nowadays we farm 16 hectares with an average production of 85,000 bottles per year. Luigi, with an experience of over 40 harvests, is supported by his wife Lorella and his son Lorenzo who represents the fifth generation of wine producers.
The family management is essential as it permits an extreme precision in every step of the production.

Great care is given to the work in the vineyards. Wine is made there from old vines which produce very few grapes. The low yields are further reduced through the green harvest, indispensable to select fruits, to have a uniform ripening and an impeccable quality. It is fundamental the scrupulous attention in the cellar with the respect for tradition and the extreme attention to details.
