Description

What kind of spirit this is

Castelgiocondo Grappa di Brunello di Montalcino by Frescobaldi is a refined pomace spirit crafted from the grape skins and seeds used to create Brunello di Montalcino. This clear, crystalline spirit reveals delicate yet intense and persistent aromas that reflect its prestigious origins. On the palate, the grappa delivers a clean, well-balanced, and harmonious profile, culminating in a distinctively velvety softness. With an alcohol content of 45% ABV, it serves as an ideal after-dinner digestif, pairing elegantly with dark chocolate to enhance its structured sensory characteristics.

Where it originates

This spirit originates from the Castelgiocondo estate in Montalcino, located within the province of Siena in Tuscany. The raw material consists exclusively of fresh grape skins and seeds, deeply rooted in the local winemaking heritage of the region. By maintaining a close connection between the terroir and the pomace, the resulting grappa captures an identity defined by its precise geographical origin. Its aromatic profile and structural depth faithfully reflect the distinctive style and complexity typically associated with the renowned Sangiovese grape and the celebrated Tuscan landscape.

How it is produced

The production process relies on the careful distillation of fresh Sangiovese pomace, obtained directly from the racking of the wine destined to become Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino. This meticulous distillation method is designed to extract a highly complex bouquet while ensuring the liquid remains entirely clear and crystalline in appearance. By preserving the delicate and persistent aromatic compounds, the technique guarantees a clean, balanced profile. The precise extraction of the grape components results in a harmonious flavour and a signature silky mouthfeel.

Dominated by the ancient tower and the small medieval village, southwest of Montalcino, Tenuta CastelGiocondo is located at an altitude of about 300 metres, an ideal terroir for producing Sangiovese.

The village of Castelgiocondo dominates from above the historic Frescobaldi estate in Montalcino, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road from the sea to Siena. The property is one of the first four from which the production of Brunello di Montalcino began in 1800.

The historical importance of the estate is testified by the knight figure shown on Castelgiocondo wine labels, taken from a famous fresco by the Sienese painter Simone Martini. The artist painted Guidoriccio da Fogliano, commander of Siena's troops, who led the attack on the castle of Montemassi. A historical coincidence that saw the Frescobaldi family begin their centuries-long adventure in the world of wine at the same time as the knight's exploits.
