How it is produced
Crafting begins with malted barley, naturally infused with peat smoke. The spirit is hand-distilled in small batches using two historic copper pot stills to ensure optimal flavour. A complex maturation follows, with the liquid resting in a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks. The whisky then undergoes a finishing period in European oak casks that previously held Oloroso Sherry. This meticulous cask programme builds a smooth structure, enriching the spirit with rich Sherry notes and a harmonious depth of malt and fruit.
History and Heritage
Founded in the Speyside region in 1898, the Benromach distillery has a rich heritage. It navigated numerous ownership changes, surviving the Prohibition era and the Great Depression of the 1930s. An interesting fact is its zero-mile production approach: pristine water is drawn directly from the Chapelton spring in the Romach Hills, whilst barley is sourced exclusively from neighbouring farms. The spirit is still traditionally hand-distilled using two historic, large copper pot stills.
