Description
Bolgheri Superiore is a DOC wine, a still red, produced in Tuscany, specifically in the coastal area of the province of Livorno, along the famous Etruscan Coast. The first Cabernet vineyard was cultivated in 1944, but the first bottle of Bolgheri Sassicaia was produced in 1968, and only in 1994 was the DOC obtained for Bolgheri Superiore. The production area includes the hills and plains along the coastal strip and therefore enjoys a climate particularly favorable to the growth and cultivation of the grapes used for this wine, which are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The soil is sandy, rich in skeleton and clay, sub-alkaline, and well-drained, with a high iron and magnesium content. Thanks to the hills behind Bolgheri, the area is protected from winter winds, while in summer, sea breezes and typical summer temperatures favor a slow and even ripening of the grapes. The qualitative characteristics of Bolgheri Superiore, a typical example of which is Poggio al Tesoro Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia, are achieved through a vinification process that involves temperature-controlled fermentation in steel tanks for ten days. Malolactic fermentation, with complete loss of acidity, then takes place in oak barrels at a temperature of 22°C. The refinement takes place in French oak barrels for eighteen months, thus obtaining the typical organoleptic characteristics of this red wine with an intense color and an elegant and very harmonious flavor.
