Description
Champagne Cristal from Maison Louis Roederer with the AOC designation is born in Reims, in that area of northern France traditionally dedicated to the production of some of the most renowned champagnes in the world. Cristal has a fascinating history, having been created in 1876 at the request of Tsar Alexander II to receive annually the Maison's best cuvée, embellished with an original detail: a pure crystal bottle. A prized blend that draws its strong personality from the unique characteristics of the Champagne terroir. The climate is influenced by two forces: continental and oceanic. This results in harsh winters with little seasonal temperature variation, a fair amount of rainfall, and abundant sunshine in summer. The soil is calcareous with a chalky undertone that ensures excellent drainage and gives the local products an unmistakable mineral aftertaste. Cristal Champagne is made only in the richest years using a very specific blend: 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay. The harvest takes place exactly 100 days after the vines bloom, generally during the first ten days of October. In the cellar, the first 2,000 liters obtained from the pressing represent the actual cuvée. The must immediately begins an initial fermentation process that lasts until spring, the period during which the Chef des Caves tastes and determines the harmonious combination of the crus. The secondary fermentation takes place in the pupitres, special racks that allow the champagne to maintain the correct position during the riddling. At this point the Cristal is ready for a double rest before the habillage of the bottle: 6 years in the cellar and 8 months after the dégorgement.
