Description

The Bolgheri Superiore produced by the Tenuta Guado al Tasso is the representation of one of the most historic estates of the Antinori family, inherited from Piero Antinori's mother in the 1930s, whose Gherardesca roots date back to 1200 years ago. The new flowering has brought life to this area on the Maremma coast and laid the foundations for the viticulture that has led the Bolgheri region to be considered one of the most wine-growing areas in the world. prestigious wines in the Italian and world panorama. In the Bolgheri amphitheater, the estate boasts a vineyard area of about 320 hectares that enjoys a perfect climate thanks to its proximity to the sea, whose breezes clear the sky allowing perfect insolation to the plants and controlling the summer heat.

The Bolgheri Superiore is governed by the DOC of the same name, and is the expression of the estate and of the Antinori family whose coat of arms appears on the capsule of all the bottles. The vineyards that give the best grapes for the production of this wine enjoy almost perfect climatic conditions. perfect thanks to the proximity to the sea which makes the winters less cold and with better sunshine and the summers less arid. This red is composed of a blend of red grapes led by percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon with the addition of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Petit Verdot grown in the alluvial clay-sandy soil typical of the Bolgheri terroir on which the estate stands. Upon arrival at the winery after the harvest, the grapes, divided by harvest plot, are carefully selected and destemmed. Before pressing, the grapes are checked again to ensure that only those with perfect ripeness are brought to fermentation. Winemaking is a very delicate art, as each individual variety is treated separately to enhance its unique characteristics. Primary fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel tanks for 15-20 days, while malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques by the end of the harvest year. After a period of rest and stabilization, each parcel is observed and the best are selected and blended. Before bottling, the wine ages for a further period in new French oak barriques.

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small but prestigious Bolgheri DOC, on the coast of upper Maremma, about one hundred kilometers southwest from Florence. This appellation has a relatively recent history, DOC Bolgheri was approved in 1994 and since then it has become an internationally recognized reference point for the Italian and international winemaking arena. The estate covers an area of about 320 hectares (790 acres) planted with vines, set in a beautiful plain encircled by rolling hillsides known as the "Bolgheri Amphitheatre" due to its particular shape.

The noble Della Gherardesca family began practicing viticulture in the late 1600’s on their land in Bolgheri, but things really began to change under the guidance of Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854). He was a passionate about viticulture. He was appointed majordomo of Grand Duke Leopold II and then dedicated himself to enology in his family’s land in Maremma. In the 1930’s, the property was inherited by Carlotta Della Gherardesca Antinori (Piero Antinori’s mother) and her sister who was married to Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta (who received the nearby Tenuta San Guido).

Wine making On arrival at the winery, the grapes were selected at two separate times: immediately after picking and then destemming, to ensure that only the best ones reached the fermentation tanks. As with every harvest, the individual vineyard plots were divided into many small plots according to the weather conditions of the year, distinguishing them by grape characteristics and vinifying them separately. Fermentation and maceration took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 15-20 days.
Aging After racking, the wine was transferred directly into barriques, where malolactic fermentation took place by the end of the year. In February, the best vinified plots were selected and blended. Guado al Tasso was then transferred back into new French oak barriques where it remained to age until bottling.
