Description
What kind of wine it is
Brunello di Montalcino Greppo is a still red wine crafted by Biondi Santi, capable of expressing the most authentic nature of Sangiovese Grosso. This wine reflects the classic style of the prestigious Montalcino area, revealing a precise and complex aromatic profile. On the palate, it delivers a warm and savoury sip, guided by vibrant freshness and well-balanced acidity. The texture, enriched by ageing in oak barrels, is supported by structured and elegant tannins, which give energy to the drink and anticipate a persistent and defined finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes are grown at the Greppo Estate, located in Montalcino, Tuscany. The vines, aged between ten and twenty-five years, take root in soils rich in stones and galestro subsoils, ideal for quality viticulture. The area benefits from a temperate climate, characterised by excellent sunlight and marked temperature variations between day and night. These pedoclimatic conditions ensure harmonious ripening, giving the wine a well-defined aromatic profile and an extraordinary capacity for long-term ageing.
How it is produced
The production process begins with a rigorous manual harvest to select the best bunches. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in oak vats, cement tanks and steel, using only indigenous yeasts. Ageing involves a long period in large Slavonian oak barrels for between twenty-four and thirty-six months, followed by maturation in the bottle.
History and Curiosities
Regarded as the first Brunello in history, the Brunello di Montalcino from Tenuta Greppo by Biondi Santi embodies the authentic nineteenth-century vision of the estate. This monumental red boasts an extraordinary longevity, being capable of evolving in the cellar for up to a century while maintaining its elegance. The 2020 vintage, marked by an unusual snowfall in March and a harvest that began in early September, has won over international critics, receiving 97 points from Decanter and 95 from Robert Parker.

"Greppo" lies on a range of hills in the Southeast of Montalcino at an altitude of about 500 meters and has a soil composition and microclimate particularly suited to the production of ageworthy and perfumed red wines. The size of the vineyards, all dedicated to produce Brunello, is 19 hectares, and they yield grapes of very high quality. The son of Ferruccio, Tancredi, a capable viticulturist and well-known oenologist in his own right, officially typified Brunello, established the foundations for the future appellation system in Italy. He launched the wine on the market and, within about ten years, achieved great commercial success and recognition for his work as a farsighted expert. A true legend of wine was born.
The Brunello di Montalcino of "Greppo" is one of the most long-lived wines of the world. Today, Tancredi’s son Franco Biondi Santi produces about seventy thousand bottles a year. He exports his wine worldwide and keeps in his cellar bottles of Brunello Riserva going back all the way to 1888. A slow ageing wine, the Brunello Biondi Santi evolves with the passing of the years and develops extraordinary perfumes and flavours while always remaining lively and persistent.
Burton Anderson defined the Brunello Biondi Santi as a "wine for meditation": very persistent, giving off delicate perfumes even after the glass is already empty. Very long-lasting perfumes and flavours and of incomparable harmony. A wine that must be savoured in the right surroundings, at the right temperature and with the proper preparation for serving.
