Description

What kind of wine it is

Bartolo Mascarello Dolcetto d’Alba is a red wine from Piedmont that enhances the essence of the Dolcetto grape variety. In the glass, it displays a brilliant ruby red colour, enlivened by purple highlights. The bouquet offers clear notes of plum and violet, enriched by dark spices, star anise and delicate balsamic hints. On the palate, it is lively and fresh, supported by developing tannins that strengthen the structure of the sip. The tasting concludes with a distinct savoury streak that prolongs its gustatory balance.

Where it comes from

This wine originates in Piedmont, within the renowned Dolcetto d’Alba denomination, produced by the historic winery Bartolo Mascarello. The vineyards are managed through natural cultivation, aimed at preserving soil vitality and ensuring healthy, expressive fruit. Production follows a philosophy faithful to its place of origin, blending the grapes into a single, harmonious expression without separating by individual plots. This artisanal choice precisely reflects the authentic identity of the Alba wine landscape.

How it is produced

The cellar process is characterised by long macerations, an essential step to extract structure and colour while maintaining a taut and dry profile. Ageing takes place in large oak barrels, where the wine achieves a measured and elegant harmony. To fully appreciate its complexity, it is recommended to decant for about an hour and serve at temperatures between 14 and 16 °C. This rigorous production care gives the red excellent longevity, allowing it to evolve positively over time.

History and Curiosities

The Dolcetto d’Alba DOC by Bartolo Mascarello embodies the pure excellence of Piedmont. Born from vineyards cultivated using natural methods and produced under the guidance of Maria Teresa Mascarello, this red wine combines lengthy macerations with careful ageing in oak barrels. The production, limited to 30,000 bottles under a single label, reflects meticulous artisanal care, rewarded with 97 points by Decanter and James Suckling. Capable of offering a superb longevity of 10-15 years, it reveals all its elegance and complexity if decanted for an hour before serving.

The company was founded in 1918 when Giulio Mascarello decided to set up his own company, leaving the Cantina Sociale and buying various vineyards in extremely suitable areas.

In the 60s he took the reins of his son Bartolo, who with passion, professionalism and personality made a decisive turning point in production, remaining far from the French fashions. The historic and legendary cellar is now managed by the daughter of Bartolo, Maria Teresa Mascarello.

The company that represents Langarola tradition par excellence is located in the center of Barolo, where the cru Cannubi, Ruè and San Lorenzo, together with the Rocche dell'Annunziata in the municipality of La Morra, are cultivated in a natural way, vinified with long macerations and wise aging in large oak barrels and then bottled with a single label without indulging in the production of separate labels for each vineyard.
