Description
What type of wine it is
Villa Mottura Primitivo di Manduria from the Mottura winery is an enveloping red wine with a Controlled Designation of Origin that faithfully reflects the identity of Salento. Made from Primitivo grapes vinified in steel and aged in French oak barrels, it presents a deep ruby hue with violet highlights. The bouquet is dominated by hints of dried plum, sour cherry and fig jam, intertwined with notes of tobacco and sweet spices. On the palate, it is robust and velvety, characterised by a full body, very fine tannins and a creamy texture with a harmonious finish.
Where it comes from
Mottura's vineyards are located on the Salento peninsula, between the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The grapes ripen in the Manduria area, rooted in calcareous and clayey soils. The local climate, with very dry springs and summers, ensures optimal ripening. The roots belong to old vines over sixty years old, cultivated according to the traditional Puglian alberello (head-trained) system. This particular environmental context ensures bunches with a marked aromatic intensity, essential for giving the wine its deep full-bodied character.
How it is produced
The entire winemaking process follows the strict standards of organic farming. Manual harvesting precedes a twelve-day maceration on the skins. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks, using pumping-over and délestage techniques to maximise extraction. Ageing for eight months takes place in French oak barrels, a fundamental step that defines a complex structure, smoothing the tannins and enriching the sip with elegant toasted sensations.
History and curiosities
Founded in 1927 in Tuglie, the Mottura winery celebrates a historic grape variety, present in the region since the ancient Phoenician and Greek colonisations. The wine is produced from vines over 60 years old, cultivated using the traditional Apulian alberello (bush-vine) system in the well-suited clay soils of Salento. The name pays tribute to the grapes' natural early ripening, as they are hand-picked at the end of August. Through organic production, the family has combined ancient regional traditions with modern techniques for four generations.

The Mottura estate is located in Tuglie, a small town in the Southern part of the Salento Peninsula. The building is still the original one, a beautiful late 19th century, Baroque-style farmhouse. Here, the cellars hide the secrets of an ancient family villa and wines age slowly in oak barrels and barriques to develop the aromas, colours and atmosphere of the land.
In almost a century of history Mottura has made great steps forward, changing and growing as wine-making on the Salento peninsula has evolved and changed for the better. As early as the 1940s large iron-ringed barrels of Mottura wines were loaded onto Northbound trains in Tuglie, headed for three plants in Naples, Rome and Milan where the wines of the Salento peninsula were distributed and appreciated. However, the Mottura estate had intentions to go beyond this, and in the ’60s it became one of the first wineries in the area to bottle its own wine. The goal to characterise the Mottura brand was clear from the start: combining big numbers with appreciable, genuine quality.
Perhaps when you’ve been making genuine wines every day for four generations, you’re ready for a new challenge. That of offering even more innovative products of better and better quality while still preserving and revitalising tradition. The result has been new product lines, already known and appreciated the world over. I Classici and Le Pitre are 2 such award-winning lines for Mottura which highlight, in a contemporary way, the potential of local grape varieties, with particular focus on the traditional Salento varieties, such as Negroamaro and Primitivo, cultivating the vines according to the historic technique known as "ad alberello" and preserving traditional wine-making methods.
