Description

What kind of wine it is

Tenimenti d’Alessandro Syrah Il Bosco is an organic still red wine made exclusively from Syrah grapes. This Tuscan excellence stands out for its intense and defined aromatic profile, characterised by earthy notes combined with complex hints of Arabica coffee grounds, cocoa beans, Tuscan cigar box and fresh mint. On the palate, it expresses a structured character, enriched by reminders of red fruits, flowers and nuances typical of the Mediterranean scrub. Ideal for accompanying flavourful dishes, it pairs excellently with game, roast pork, rich first courses and mature cheeses, revealing great depth after adequate decanting.

Where it comes from

This Syrah originates in the Cortona area, from vineyards located on the Manzano hills between 290 and 300 metres above sea level. The soils are predominantly clay and silt, immersed in a dry microclimate that favours regular and balanced ripening of the grapes. The grapes are grown in specific plots, managed with high planting density and a spur-pruned cordon training system. The low yields allow for maximum concentration of aromas and flavours, making this selection a solid quality benchmark for the entire winery's production.

How it is produced

The manual harvest takes place at the end of September. In the winery, alcoholic fermentation is accompanied by a 15-20 day maceration on the skins to extract colour and phenolic components, followed by malolactic fermentation carried out directly in wood. The wine then matures for a period of 18-20 months in barrels, supported by periodic bâtonnage to refine its texture. During this maturation, constant tastings allow the best lots to be selected for the definition of the final blend, completing the cycle with a final ageing aimed at achieving perfect structural balance.

History and Curiosities

Created in 1992 as a selection of excellence by Tenimenti Luigi d’Alessandro, Il Bosco embodies the quintessence of the Manzano hills. The grapes come from prestigious plots cultivated at high planting density, a technique ideal for concentrating fragrances and aromas. This refined organic wine represents a true benchmark for Italian Syrah, able to harmoniously blend elegance and structure. The 2020 vintage confirms its prestige, boasting an exceptional 95 points from James Suckling.

Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro winery was born in 1967 when the d'Alessandro family moved from Rome and purchased prime 100 hectares of the Manzano farm. In 1988 Massimo d'Alessandro began experiments on 5 hectares planted by Attilio Scienza to determine the quality of the area. Until then Cortona only produced blended wines. It took four years of micro-vinification and careful study of the soil and climate to develop Syrah into an international variety. Thanks to the grape's particular acclimation to the dry Cortona environment, the results were excellent and deeply affected by the local characteristics of the land.

As a result of the experiments, from 1993 to 2002, Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro gradually planted 40 hectares of Syrah at a high density (8,000 plants per hectare).
Due to international recognition and awards, in particular for the Il Bosco label (100% Syrah), several major producers, including Antinori and Ruffino, purchased land in the vicinity and began planting Syrah.
In 1999 the Cortona area achieved D.O.C. status.

The search for quality has been the driving force for everything and after 20 years of experimentation, Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro continues to invest in the quality of its wines with great care thanks to the cooperation of Luca Currado and Christine Vernay, both collaborating in getting the finest results.
Today our Syrah is an authentic local wine and Il Bosco along with Migliara are produced by selected grapes of the highest quality. Both labels now represent the quality benchmark for all Italian Syrah.
