Description
What kind of wine it is
Prunotto Barolo Bussia is a still red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes. An expression of the Barolo area, it displays an intense garnet colour in the glass with bright ruby highlights. On the nose, clear notes of ripe stone fruits emerge, harmoniously intertwined with floral and spicy aromas. The palate reveals an enveloping structure, supported by sweet tannins that lead to a long and persistent finish. Its organoleptic profile pairs excellently with flavourful dishes such as red meats and game, also enhancing pork-based preparations and mature cheeses. It is recommended to decant for one hour before tasting to fully appreciate every nuance.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the prestigious Bussia cru, a striking vineyard amphitheatre located in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe. The rows of vines stretch at around three hundred and fifty metres above sea level, benefiting from optimal exposure to the south and south-west. The soil is characterised by a composition alternating limestone and clay with sandy deposits, originating from marine geological sediments of the Tortonian era. The microclimate and soil shape the vineyard’s identity, which Prunotto enhances through rigorous field selection.
How it is produced
After careful manual selection, the bunches are destemmed and crushed. The temperature-controlled maceration on the skins lasts for about fifteen days, ensuring the correct extraction of colour and aromas before the completion of malolactic fermentation. The maturation takes place over a period of twenty-four months, using a combination of large French oak casks and second-use barriques to enrich the wine’s texture. The production cycle concludes with twelve months of bottle ageing, an essential step to consolidate balance and flavour stability.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1904, the Prunotto winery revolutionised Piedmontese oenology by introducing the first selection of the Bussia cru in 1961, a historic vineyard amphitheatre in Monforte d’Alba. Overseen by oenologist Gianluca Torrengo, the precious 2021 vintage transformed limited yields into exceptional quality, earning 95 points from Decanter and Vinous. Before being released to the market, this noble red matures for a further 12 months in the bottle, ensuring absolute elegance on the palate and offering a tasting experience of unparalleled historical prestige.
